    how to reinstall OE

My OE is not working correctly. I can't use the dictionary or write new messages. I get an error message saying I should reinstall OE. Where can I find OE to reinstall. I tried reinstalling IE6 but I got a message saying my IE 6 was newer that the one I was trying to install.

    Any ideas.

have you got the XP disc?

the reason the IE6 you've got is newer than the one you're trying to install is maybe due to updates

In XP SP2 the reinstall method is to reinstall SP2 as IE6 is fully integrated and updated in SP2.

In SP1 you need to make the registry edit as noted here:

Setup has detected a newer version of Internet Explorer already installed on this system.
    Setup cannot continue.

Thank you for the information. I'm not comfortable editing the registry. So I was thinking it might be easier to just install the new version of IE 7 rather than trying to edit the registry and then reinstall IE6. Any comments on this fix for my problem?

    Thanks,

Installing Beta software for a Fix is a bad idea.

    Do you have XP SP2?

If not install that and it will reload IE6.

    jephree,

I have XP SP2 installed. When I go to the link for re-installing Win XP SP2 all I see is info on how to first install SP2. You are directed to the MS update site and since I already have SP2 there is no way to reinstall it.

I'm at a loss as to how to proceed. Any help will be appreciated.

You need to uninstall it first.

Go to start > Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs

Make sure the Show Updates box is clicked and SP2 will be on the list.

    Windows XP Service Pack 2

Uninstall and then go to Windows Updates and it will be available for install.

Thanks for helping me with this. When I follow your instructions a lot of Win updates appear but not "Windows XP Service Pack 2. My computer came with SP2 installed, I didn't add it. Would this have something to do with it??

Yes that has everything to do with it.

What is the make and model of the computer? Did it come with Recovery disks?

In a worse case scenario you can run a Repair Install but your manufacturer may have some less extensive options for IE/OE repair. The manual and or Troubleshooting from the manufacturer's web site might have these options. If you need assistance in searching please post back the exact Make and Model of the computer.

Also could you please post the OE error message verbatim?

I have a Toshiba Satellite M35X-S349. It comes with a "Recovery and Applications/Drivers DVD", but no disc for WinXP. I guess the operating system is on the disc. The instructions say the disc will allow you to completely recover or selectively re-install software on your Toshiba computer.

I've checked both the manual and web site for more info on this problem with OE.
When I open OE and click on Compose new email I get the following
"The Address Book failed to load. Outlook Express is incorrectly configured, please re-install."

When I click OK I get a second message "There was an error opening this message. An error has occurred."

When I click on Address Book I get the following : " Unable to open the Address Book. The Address Book may not be installed properly."

I'm thinking that maybe the Address Book is corrupt. Do you think it might work to delete the Address Book and then import my Address Book from another computer??? I'll check the manual and web site for info on using the Recovery disc.

Again, much thanks for you continued help.

After writing the above I located a MS article (917288) that discusses this issue. This problem occurs after you install cumulative security update 911567. The fix involves deleting the security update, then deleting your address book and importing it again later. Then you reinstall security update 911567. I'm going to try this and see what happens.
