    Abnormally Slow Connection Speed

    Hello All.

I've recently come to a university in Leeds, UK, to read for a PhD, and I have connected up to the university's network, through which I can access the internet. Since doing this, however, far from having the super-fast Broadband connection speed I am supposed to have, my connection speed is slow.

I ran an online connection speed test and this is what it came back with:

    Communications: 61.1 kilobits per second
    Storage 7.5 kilobytes per second
    1MB file download 2.3 minutes
    Subjective rating: Slow

    Date & time Sunday, September 17, 4:33PM*
    Test type IDT4 Free
    Connection type: Ethernet
    Region: United Kingdom
    Data size 1024KB

    My computer specifications are:

    AMD Athlon XP 3000+
    2.17 GHz
    512 Mb of DDR RAM.

I'm running Windows XP 2002 Home Edition, with Service Pack 2 and all current Updates.

Everyone else whom I have spoken to who is in the same accommodation block as me at my university has the fast connection they are supposed to. In the university I left just 5 months ago my computer was running just fine on that uni's high speed broadband connection, so I know that there hasn't been a problem until now.

The only thing I can think of that might have interfered with the connection speed was that the setup disk given to me by my university's technical staff loaded McAfee antivirus while I still had Sophos antivirus on my computer. I wasn't connected to the university network or internet when this happened, and I uninstalled Sophos straight afterwards (it's license had expired anyway).

When I finally got hooked up to the network and tried to surf the Net, my connection was running slow. I tried uninstalling McAfee and re-installing it, but it has made no difference to the problem.

Can anyone offer me any help please?

    Hi and welcome to D-A-L

you're best doing a couple of speed tests I've just used http://specials.zdnet.co.uk/misc/band-test/ and it says my speed is 2009.9 Kbps run it again and its 2181.8 Kbps I also had a 759.6 Kbps

Okay, so I've run the test a 7 times now, and I'm coming up with an average of about 88 Kbps. So the connection is still fast. This said, surfing the internet and trying to download anything is painfully slow, slower than anyone else in my accomodation. Also, webpages take longer to open than they should.

Is there a problem with my computer perhaps?

88 Kbps is not very fast what speed are others getting.

is your PC a laptop or has anyone who's having no problem using a laptop that they can bring to your room?

Save 20% on AVG Internet Security 2012 Suite!
    I don't get it then.

I'll have to ask at the help desk tomorrow.

    Thanks for your help!
