Unhappy Help!! Please! Computer Is Hosed Bad!!

Help! I downloaded IE 7 Beta because in the system information I found that IE 6 had several missing, damaged or corrupt files, and my computer has been SO SLOW lately its unbelievable- massive hung apps etc- so I figured that was the problem...Yes, I have ad aware, Mcafee virus program, deleted cookies, temp files, etc, etc. None of these things have helped. I have AOL (yuk) and have reinstalled that several times as well to no avail.
I have a Compaq Presario 6000 with 80gb hdd, 1.8 cpu, 512mb ram, winxp home edition w/SP2, and have automatic updates. The only other thing I have noticed, is that when i went to "tweak" the registry, (using a pcworld article as a guide) I found that the key "I/O page lock limit" is not where it should be (it isnt anywhere) and I also noticed that the first line was "default" with no value set....WEIRD EH? and i have been occasionally getting "not enough virtual memory ...." messages, which is why I wanted to tweak the registry in the first place! LOL Anyway, this %^*(&*#$*^ computer is giving me MIGRAINS as I sell on Ebay, and it is impossible to do ANYTHING on this piece of...equipment Anyone who can help will be sooo appreciated!!! Thanks DAL

First off installing Beta software as a means of fixing a problem is not a good idea.

    I would suggest uninstalling IE7.

    As to your Virtual Memory:

To set Virtual Memory: Right click My Computer then click Properties > Advanced

Performance > Settings > Advanced > Virtual Memory > Change

With C: as the drive selected click System Manage Size then Set and OK your way out thru the windows.

My next step would be the following:

As a first response you might want to post a HijackThis log for review by our Pros in that section:

Please follow the instructions HERE & then post your log in a new thread in the Spyware, Adware, Viruses and HijackThis Logs section.

    (Not in this section please).

Please specify what issues you appear to be experiencing along with your log.

If all of the above does not help running a Repair Install of XP might be the most expedient course.

NOTE: I posted this last night under a different forum and was advised to uninstall IE 7 beta, which I did, as well as check the virtual memory settings- which were already set right. Internet explorer is still terrible- I can use AOL for the most part, but even it hangs after awhile and reboot is necesary. Im at wits end and I SOOO do not want to have to reinstall windows. I was unable to download the hijackthis to send a error log file. Thanks again, in advance

Hello- Well, I clicked on the link to download the HIJACKTHIS file and it asked me to run or save-(i tried both ) and it "installs" but where it is I havent a clue. I searched for it afterward and it is nowhere to be found on my computer. Ive actually attempted this 3-4 times, both running the file and saving it. Thanks again for your replies- I am ready to FREAK OUT! LOL

    http://www.merijn.org/files/hijackthis_sfx.exe

    This is a ZIP file.

Choose SAVE and Save To My Documents.

After that go to My Documents and right click the HijackThis file and choose:

    Extract to Here: Folder etc.

If you get here then it is just a matter of running it by double clicking the .exe

If this still does not work for you I will find a direct link to the executable.

    WoW!

That just happened to me today too:

    http://www.d-a-l.com/help/showthread.php?t=46195

    Coincidence is so weird!

What I am doing for my friend is what VopThis suggested:

Download the Hijackthis .exe on another computer and choose Save:

Save to either a floppy or CD depending on your circumstances.

Before Saving rename the file to Test.exe or whatever.

Apparently we have a similar bug that blocks HijackThis by name.

Save 20% on AVG Internet Security 2012 Suite!
I have come across a post from the creator of HijackThis:
    May 22, 2005:
McAfee is at is again, unfortunately. Yes, I am aware of the fact that McAfee detects HijackThis 1.99.1 as a generic worm. For the fourth time. Yes, I am aware of the fact that McAfee detects the StartupList standalone as an mhtml exploit webpage. This makes respectively the fifth and sixth time McAfee has mistakenly detected one of my programs as some brand of virus. And I'm getting pretty tired of this. Am I supposed to email each and every new version of a program I publish to McAfee so they can verify that UPX compression does not automatically equal a scary virus??
    http://www.merijn.org/

If you do not want to bother with the importing of a floppy or CD copy I would just momentarily disable McAfee to get the download then re-activate.
