Internet Explorer is fine and then not

    Hi,

I have windows XP professional (genuine) -- was pirated but got upgrade to turn into genuine from Microsoft 92 G B pounds. Upgraded about 3.1/2 months ago.

Anyhow, I open Internet Explorer and call up web pages, etc. and there's no problem for an hour or so (sometimes longer other times shorter) and then I attempt to call up web pages or search, etc. and a page appears from IE "This Page cannot be displayed" and then gives troubleshooting tips. I've tried these but still same problem. I usually have two IE windows open for ease of browsing but not always.

I have pop up blocker turned off. My computer is Intel(R) Celeron (R) CPU 2.00 GHZ 1.99 GHZ 224 MB Ram. "Amount of disc space to use for temp folders" - 2656 MB. Free Space on C drive is 30.5 GB. I've done a check to see if Disc cleanup and/or defragmentation is needed but it is not.

I've done searches on DAL re previous logs but could not find an answer to my problem. Also searches on Int. Explorer "Help" but no result.

Be pleased if somebody could help.

    Thanks,
    Ray

Try deleting all your History and Cookies and Temporary Internet Files via Tools > Internet Options... > General

Also are you sure that your internet connection is not being dropped by your ISP?

    Hi Jephree,

Thanks for submitting help above and trust you're doing well :-)

I've been continually doing first paragraph above and then rebooting. It works fine for a while and the same phenomena occurs as I mentioned previously.

Re your second paragraph above. If my ISP connection cuts off a window pops up telling me and even so many times when the problem occurs I check and see if I am connected to the Internet and I always am.

    Any other ideas?

    Thanks,
    Ray

    Do you have SP2?

If so the repair function for IE is to reinstall it as IE SP2 is incorporated into XP SP 2.

How to reinstall or repair Internet Explorer and Outlook Express in Windows XP

I would also run Clean Disk and Disk Defragmenter regardless of the analysis.

Also check your Page File Size:

Right click My Computer then click Properties

    Advanced > Performance > Settings > Advanced > Virtual memory > Change

Is this set to System Manage Size?

Also: look in your Event viewer: rt. click My Computer then click Manage then Event Viewer.
Or: Administrative Tools/Event Viewer or Start/Run/ eventvwr
Open the system as well as the application tabs & look for X errors. Click error line for details.
Post back the source & event id & Description especially of errors that seem to coincide with this issue.
Also check the Information lines that might coincide with this issue.

How to view and manage event logs in Event Viewer in Windows XP

    Hi Jephree,

Thanks for all of above. I do have SP2 but I don't fancy doing a reinstall due to me doing it incorrectly.

However, I've run Clean Disk and Disk Defragmenter.

On the check Page File Size: I've done that and the result is: set to Custom size -- Initial Size (MB) 336 -- Maximum size (MB) 672

Reference the Event Viewer. I checked under "Application" there are many X errors over several months period. I checked many of them and they were the same or similar to the following two I selected:

Date: 29/07/06 Source: Application Hang Event ID: 1001
    Description: Fault Bucket 126637809

Date: 19/07/06 Source: Application Hang Event ID: 1000
Description: Faulting application iexplore.exe, version 6.0.2900.2180, faulting module dhtmled.ocx, version 6.1.0.9232, fault address 0x0000b6ff

I checked under "Security" -- nothing shown.

I checked under "System" and again there are many X errors over several months period. I checked many of them and they were the same or similar to the following three I selected:

Date: 30/07/06 Source: Service Control Manager Event ID: 7000
Description: The Sygate Personal Firewall service failed to start due to the following error: The system cannot find the file specified.

Date: 30/07/06 Source: Service Control Manager Event ID: 7000
Description: The General Purpose USB Driver (adildr) service failed to start due to the following error: The service cannot be started either because it is disabled or becaue it has no enabled device associated with it.

Date: 29/07/06 Source: Net BT Event ID: 4311
Description: Initialization failed because the driver device could not be created

Maybe from the above info the fault can be isolated and troubleshooted?

    Thanks,
    Ray

First set your Page File to System Manage Size.

Then: Do you use Sygate Personal Firewall? Is it turned on and running?

If you use it and it appears to be running have you turned off the SP2 firewall? If not do so.

Or try running the SP2 firewall and turn off Sygate. Only use one at a time.

Also if the problem persists try this:

    1. From the Windows Start menu, choose Run.

    2. Copy and paste the line below into the Run box (right click and use the paste command):

    regsvr32.exe "c:\program files\common files\microsoft shared\triedit\DHTMLED.OCX"

Please be sure to copy and paste the complete line above. If you type the line, please be sure to include all spaces and quotes.

    3. Click OK.

    Hi Jephree,

Thanks for help above. If appears that I only have the SP2 firewall.

I did the rest of all of the above. Still having same problem.

I did visit My Computer Info -- View the Status and it shows that my Hard Disk (C) is usage 16% (low). I already did Disc cleanup and Defragment.

    Any other ideas? Thanks,

    Ray

Save 20% on AVG Internet Security 2012 Suite!
My only other idea at this point is to uninstall and reinstall SP2.

From start > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs (check: Show Updates)

Uninstall SP2 and reboot and then check Windows Update to reinstall it.

If XP SP2 was pre-installed on your computer then what is the make and model of the computer ?
