    Internet shows connected, but nothing works

    Have tried searching desperately to get my internet to work at my home. I have had my computer connected for 2 years at my school's network, which has a pretty secure network. After bringing my computer home i can plug it in at my house and the network will show that it has connected, but I am unable to view web pages or use aim, etc. Basically I'm not connected at all. I am connecting via a hard line to a cable modem and have tried a variety of things. I use Windows XP Pro SP 2

    All of my IP and DNS setting are set to automatic.
    when I go to the command prompt and type ipconfig/all i get the following

    IP= 169.254.112.63
    Subnet Mask: 255.255.0.0

    I ran the network diagnostic tool and it said that my IP address passed, but my DHCP server said it had an invalid IP address of 255.255.255.255

    any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Does this suggest anything as to your setup?

    No, all I am doing is just unplugging my mom's computer from the cable modem and plugging mine in so that it is just cable, modem , then my computer. Nothing else networked in.

    Have you tried: start / Run: cmd

    ipconfig /release

    followed by:

    ipconfig /renew

    Also:

    also just thought have you tried opening network connections on the xp machine then right clicking on your connection then click on internet protocol to high light it then click on properties underneath another pop up appears under general tell it to obtain ip address automatically and do the same for dns server underneath. then do same for alternate configuration then click ok.

    after trying to renew it gives an error and says that it can not find my DHCP server

    all of my IP/DNS settings are set to automatic addressing

    I'm pretty dumbfounded by this one

    okay...contacted my isp as well as my school. School said nothing they had on there would affect it and if I removed myself from domain then I should be good to go. The ISP told me to just reset the cable modem, but it still doesn't work. Whenever i try to renew the IP address, it just tells me that it can not find the DHCP server. Is there anything that I might be missing??
