    error 10050

A couple of days ago I had to do a repair install for windows xp and it fixed my comp. problem but now I can not connect to the internet, I get a message that reads:

could not start DB server: socket () failed (10050) A socket operation encountered a dead network.

Could someone help me out or point me in the right direction to fix this problem.

    thanks

    SP1? SP2?

If you have not loaded SP1 there is this old problem:

    Locate the following registry subkey:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\Curr*entControlSet\Servi ces\RasMan\*PPP\EAP

Delete the following registry keys under the EAP subkey:
    25
    26

Quit Registry Editor, and then restart your computer.

I could of sworn I had SP2, but I checked and its SP1. Well I deleted the two registry keys like you said too. Restarted the computer a couple of times and resetted the ethernet modem and it still is not working. The error message has not appeared again though. I am going to do some research to see what I find. Do you have any other ideas?

    Thanks

I would suggest taking SP2 and all subsequent Critical Updates from Windows Updates.

If the issue persists after that we can at least eliminate that as a source.

Was your connection OK prior to the reinstall of XP?

Did you have SP2 prior to the reinstall?

    Otherwise this general search:

yes it was working fine and yes i think I had SP2. This might sound dumb but how exactly would I get SP2 and the updates? do I save them on a floppy and transfer?

You can download and burn to CD SP2 here:

    http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en

After which you can load onto your other machine.

Other possibilities are your drivers. Modem driver perhaps. When you reinstall (even repair install) XP you loose all upgrades and 3rd party drivers.
