internet explorer has encountered an error question?

hi guys, im a newb so be nice =)
i get a " internet explorer has encountered an error " now every time i use iexplorer but it doens't actually prevent me from using explorer, i just move it aside and continue browsing w/o any problems. a friend said to try firefox and the same thing happens.
    the details are
    appname iexplore.exe appver 6.0.2900.2180
    modname unknown modver 0.0.0.0
    offset 001405f3

when i use the firefox browser its the same error. Also, at the same time this started when i have to look through/manage files using window explorer, i get a similar error, but again if i just put the message aside i can do anything i want, the programs work fine. help! thanks so much in advance,
    soph

I have seen this possibility to check that error:

Check this setting: (check this box if not checked):

Right click My Computer then click Properties: >

Advanced > Performance > Settings > Data Execution Prevention >

Turn on DEP for essential Windows Programs and services only

If this doesn't help look in your Event Viewer for further errors:

Event viewer: rt. click My Computer then click Manage then Event Viewer.
Or: Administrative Tools/Event Viewer or Start/Run/ eventvwr
Open the system as well as the application tabs & look for X errors. Click error line for details.
Post back the source & event id & Description especially of errors that seem to coincide with this issue.
Also check the Information lines that might coincide with this issue.

How to view and manage event logs in Event Viewer in Windows XP

the DEP was already set for essential Windows Programs and services only, and that is really cool how u can see the log of errors, thx! in the system log there were no errors but the application log, there was one that corresponded exactly to the time of the error message

Is this a new problem? Were things working OK previously? Any new hardware and or software?

Unfortunately those errors are quite vague

When the error box comes up is there a Details button? If so click it and see if anything new is revealed.

Do you have all the current updates from Windows Updates?

Also if you are interested in trying to trace the details you might try FileMon:

FileMon monitors and displays file system activity on a system in real-time.

    http://www.sysinternals.com/Utilities/Filemon.html

Also this site is helpful in translating those Event Errors:

    jephree and sophi

I'm having the almost exact same situation as sophi, i.e.
--Faulting application xxxx faulting module unknown xxxxxx.
--I.E., firefox, opera, ALL other applications that need an internet connection -- trigger the Error.
--Like sophi, I can put aside the Error Msg, and still surf. Just that it's plain annoying. And I've been surfing the net over the past 3 days for self-help tips - but to no avail.

    jephree,
In my case, it's the FIRST TIME such incidents happen. My Toshiba Satellite A10 notebook has been working fine in the past 2.5 years, it's a P4 2.2 machine running on WinXP SP2 in 1G RAM.

Really appreciate if any one can give me pointers to fix that!!!!

    Thx.

Any updates recently? Windows Update? etc.

Are you running NIS? What about AOL?

Is this a new problem? Were things working OK previously? Any new hardware and or software?

If this is a new problem try a System Restore to a point prior to the problem:

start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Restore

some additional bkg that my notebook is having.

    - It has latest high-priority update via Windows Update
    - Not NIS. But Symantec anti-virus and firewall with latest def files update, I hv them for more than 2 years.
    - No AOL, nor and applications of IM
    - Like I discribed, it's a new problem happened since Saturday.
    - Re - system restore point. Interestly, I tried restoring to various dates/milestones (it only has restore points up to 2 weeks before), everytime, Wiindows said the job was not successfuly because it found out that '.... there was no change in system on milestone/date chosen, ........'. Very strange.

I found a work-round to add Avant Brower into the startup list. Then, when I start using avant browser to get onto the internet, the error msg doesn't pop out. But same trick doesn't work for firefox, opera, etc. Firefox just can't start. And Opera still triggers the same error msg with Event ID=1000.

Save 20% on AVG Internet Security 2012 Suite!
I have seen that initial error appname iexplore.exe related to Norton software. Just as one test turn off Norton and try to connect.

I also see this re: Event ID 1000:

    SYMPTOMS
The following event may be logged in the Application event log:
    Event ID: 1000
    Event Source: Userenv
    Description:
Windows cannot determine the user or computer name. Return value (1722).
The client computer may also experience an extremely slow logon.

    CAUSE
This behavior can occur if the address for the configured preferred DNS server on the client is invalid or unreachable.

    RESOLUTION
To resolve this behavior, correct the DNS address in the Internet Protocol (IP) properties: 1. Right-click My Network Places, and then click Properties.
    2. Right-click Local Area Connection, and then click Properties.
    3. Click Internet Protocol (TCP/IP), and then click Properties.
    4. Type the correct DNS address in the Preferred DNS server box.
Also I would remove all software including any browsers from automatically starting.

How to troubleshoot by using the System Configuration utility in Windows XP

And then this behavior including the System Restore issues are symptomatic of Virus or Malware issues. That being said:

As a first response you might want to post a HijackThis log for review by our Pros in that section:

Please follow the instructions HERE & then post your log in a new thread in the Spyware, Adware, Viruses and HijackThis Logs section.
    (Not in this section please).

Please specify what issues you appear to be experiencing along with your log.
