    Missing Information bar in IE6

Hi. Can anyone please point me to a reliable way to remove and re-instal IE6? Over the past few months bits have begun "dropping off" it. First, my home page corrupted and all I can get now is an error message telling me that an internal error occurred, followed by: A security exception occurred: [002] Invalid Request . I've Googled this and can find nothing that helps me to repair things. I can now only set a blank home page as my default as any other page defaults to the corrupted one.
Now the Information Bar has gone walk about. This has resulted in pop-up windows popping up and immediately disappearing. As a result I cannot download anything from (for example) the McAfee website. Pop-up blocker is permanently switched off, but makes no difference.
I did find what I though was a sure fire solution at http://www.amset.info/tips/internet-...p#IE6-Complete. Sure enough on rebooting the computer a message appeared saying that IE was no longer on the machine. But, oh yes it still is! And still totally pear-shaped.
I'm running Win XP Home SP2 and am virus- spy- and adware-free as of this moment.
I'm desperate! Any help much appreciated

Can you actually get on to the McAfee website? How's about the www.symantec.com website? If you can't I'm sorry to say but you've probably got infected with a virus. They tend to disable certain elements and obstruct your ability to visit the very sites that can help you.

You can uninstall ie from your Control Panel in Windows.... then you can reinstall it again from the same place. It's the add/remove windows components that you need to look for

Personally, I would recommend you download and install Firefox

Not only is it free - it's way better than IE, has fab plugins and addons and is totally customisable with tabbed browsing... keeps your taskbar uncluttered

Many thanks for the fast response. Yes, I can get on to the McAfee website. Haven't tried Symantec, though as I've never used their products. I'd be very surprised if I have a virus as (so far) nothing has ever sneaked past McAfee's VirusScan, which I've been using for years. I run regular scans and nothing ever shows up. I also use AdAware and AdWatch, and Spybot Search & Destroy, and McAfee's Personal Firewall. Call me paranoid...

Unfortunately Win XP SP2 does not provide the option of uninstalling IE from Control Panel. You have to fool XP into believing IE no longer exists on the computer instead. And I can't find a way to do this.

Firefox... I luuurve it! It's my browser of choice and I've been using it for more than a year. The IE Tab extension lets you embed the IE engine in Firefox. (But I'm sure you already know that). So I can, in fact, use Firfox as though it were IE if I have to. So no need ever to use IE again. But... it's just that I want to re-build IE, just for the hell of it!

Many thanks for all your help.

Now that's the kind of computing I like

XP sp2 does Click Start>Control Panel>Add or Remove Programs>Add/Remove Windows Components (I'm on the professional version though so not entirely sure if you're using home etc or even if that's the same LOL)

A pop up window will appear... uncheck the Internet Explorer and click Next. It will do the necessaries.... then, go through the same palava and recheck the Internet Explorer, clicking next etc

Clicking that box in Windows Components removes the shortcuts to IE. It disables IE but does not remove it.

IE is totally integrated into the XP operating system as many files are shared with other functions. It cannot be removed.

SP2 loads the latest version of IE and the repair function here is to reinstall SP2:

IE is needed for some pages such as Windows Update although if you set Automatic Updates you do not need the Microsoft web site.

And contrary to others I find IE much more powerful and faster than other browsers. It has a great deal of features such as Net Meeting that other browsers cannot handle.

Just stay updated and know your settings and where you are going

As with many interactive things you get out of it what you put into it.

"Remove Windows Components..." Nope. Sorry. No such option available in XP Home, which is what I'm running. Seem to remember reading somewhere or other that Microsoft, helpful as ever, dropped this feature from Home and included it only in Professional. Can only remove three Windows components: SP2, Windows Installer and WinHTTP QFE.

Still up gum tree without a paddle!

The option to remove access to IE was put into Pro in case an Administrator desired to block Internet Access for whatever reason as Pro was designed for the Office environment.

As mentioned it only blocks access (removes shortcuts).

The latest version of IE is totally integrated into SP2. To repair IE one needs to reinstall SP2.
