    Missing / Disappearing Favourites

Computer details: Windows XP Professional V2002, AMD Athalon XP 2500 = 1.8Ghz 512MB Ram
Avant Browser is my current browser but same problem with Windows Explorer

The Problem: "My favourites" have all lost their URL s. You can type in the URL in details and then it works ok for that session, however when you close down Avant Browser all the favourites don't work again as the URLs have all been removed.
It's very frustrating and I have been trying to sort this for ages now.
The only way you can get back to a previous website/one you use a lot is go to the address bar and click the down arrow then a list of visited sites come up and I am able to select it and click.

I am wondering if my spyware tool has deleted something or the favourites folder is missing altogether.

Any guidance would be much appreciated
    John

I have never used Avant Browser but I may try it out and find more info.

Searching their forums all I can find Re: Favorites is:
    Welcome to the forums.
Tools>>Avant Browser Options>>New Window. Place a check next to Favorites and Address Box under "Always create a new window for:"
This was in regards to another issue but just thought that I'd pass it on.

    You might try their forums:

    http://forum.avantbrowser.com/index.php

If I install it and find anything I will let you know.

I have installed the Avant Browser and I thank you for the idea. I like it alot. Many features beyond Firefox although like any browser it takes some getting used to.

Anyway I observed that it instantly incorporates IE as to Favorites and also uses the IE Internet Options. Seeing that and then realizing you said you had the same problem with "Windows Explorer" which I am assuming you meant IE or the Favorites as viewed thru Windows Explorer.

Anyway again try these initial steps:

    RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem in Internet Explorer, follow these steps:

    1. Quit all programs that are running.
    2. Click Start, and then click Run.
    3. Type regsvr32 urlmon.dll and then click OK.
    4. When you receive the "DllRegisterServer in urlmon.dll succeeded" message, click OK.
If this does not resolve the problem, repeat steps 2 through 4 for each of the following files (in step 3, replace Urlmon.dll with each of the file names below):

    • Shdocvw.dll
    • Actxprxy.dll
    • Oleaut32.dll
    • Mshtml.dll
    • Browseui.dll
    • Shell32.dll

Restart the computer after each attempt to enable the changes to take effect.

    Hello Jephree,
Many thanks for the guidance. Glad you tried Avant Browser, I like it lot's better than IE.
(Yes I did mean Internet Explorer in firtst post.)

Well I tried your advice and it worked for the first one "regsvr32 urlmon.dll" so I shut down the PC and restarted it. Tried AB saving page as favourite and it still didnt save the url information, it saves the title and it puts it into the favourites folder in AB as when you click to select favourites it's there but theere is no url saved when you have a look at the details by using the edit details.
I then tried the other 6 file names and all of them returned the same message, saying it cant run as they are part of operation system files and am I sure I want to run, if so select the program to open with from the list of programs. Needless to say I don't know which program to use so I just hit cancel.
I hope the above makes sense.
Any more advice? and AB is a good browser, honest I think this problem is something I have done and not the Avant Browser itself
    bfn

Did you always type the regsvr32?

    regsvr32 urlmon.dll

    regsvr32 Shdocvw.dll

    etc.

    Hello again Jephree
You were correct I hadnt typed regsvr32 before the file lame.

I have typed in the first three and restarted each time, and got down to "Browseul.dll and a message came up saying
"loadlibrary Browseul.dll failed- the specific module could not be found"

I have stopped there and not typed in the last one which is Shell32.dll

    Are you making progress???
Thanks a lot for the help by the way, you have no idea how frustrating it's been trying to sort this out.
    regards
    John

Go to start > Search & choose All files and folders then type: Browseui.dll

    Does anything show up?

Also do you have SP2 installed? Plus all subsequent critical updates?

  8. #8
Yes it does, there are five files, all are around 997 kb and were created 23/08/2001 - 29/08/2002
    29/08/2002 - 04/08/2004 - 04/08 2004
    File names below

    browseui.dll C\WINDOWS\$NtServicepackUnisstall$
    BROWSEUI.dll C\WINDOW\system32
    browseui.dll C\WINDOWS\ServicepackFiles\i386
    browseui.dll C|WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\Download\6ca7b3a8ef d5a9b6f87fff395a2eb989
    browseui.dll C\Documents and Settings\Default User\My Documents

Sorry it's a bit messy Ive had to copy it in by hand rather than cut and paste.
I think SP2 is installed but not sure about critical updates. How would I tell?

PS am going on a course this morning and wont be back until late Wednesday pm so will check again to see if you have any more suggestions.
    Many thanks
    John
