Question Help!Browser opens a new window but closes original

I am experiencing problems with internet explorer 6 on windows xp.When i open a new window such as a link or right click "open in new window"the original closes then a new one opens. This is obviously very frustrating as i cannot go back to any previous pages.
I ran a virus check and got rid of a few W32 viruses caused by a zip file i was attempting to open.I did pre-scan with norton which found and removed some viruses but when i ran the zip file some changes were alerted by my anti-spyware.I immediately shut down my pc and the ran all of my spyware, virus progs etc.Thats when some things like winlog was detected as spyware and removed and W32 Acra F,W32 Alcra B,W32 Spybot.Worm were found and removed, but the above problem with internet explorer still exists. It is obviously a reg change.I created a guest account and that runs fine, can you recommend a tool or a manual assist to get my main user administrator account back to normal please.I have trawled many forums without no joy, most just say reset all settings in internet explorer but this has been done and does not cure the problem.Should i re-install internet explorer 6 from scratch?

Any help or advice on this would be hugely appreciated.

If this issue only affects the one account then I doubt that repairing IE would help.

If you want to try the basic steps are: with SP2: uninstall then reinstall SP2; with SP1: run sfc /scannow from start > run. You will need you XP CD in order to do this.

Otherwise you could create a new account. Are you saying that the built-in Admin account is corrupted? If it is not the built-in account simply create a new account and transfer your data and settings:

Thanks for the advice Jephree.I created a new account and assigned it to admin, then opened I.E and all was ok.I then followed your link to transfer all details except those mentioned on that page and everything is back to normal so far(all apart from having windows welcoming me to all apparently"new"tasks and giving me helpful hints etc)i can put up with that though.
I hope this helps others with the same issues as well ,as i know from other forums that i am not alone on this problem.Microsoft/windows help pages do not offer much help to the novice as i have been there for the last week or so trying to search and find a fix that someone like Jephree can sort out in less than 24 hours since this was posted. For instance try finding out how to delete the old account that you no longer need in windows or microsoft help pages!!!

    Regards and till next time,Johnojones.

P.S. Never open Zips from unknown origin even after a Norton scan!!!
