Browser does not find internet......

Browsers can not find the internet....
I have WiFi in my home and it has worked fine for quite a while now, but today my daughter brought her laptop (HP Pavilion ze5300) for me to work on. It connected fine after the usual code was put in, but for some reason I can not get Internet Explorer, or Firefox which I downloaded using phone line ISP, to find the internet. I turned on the XP updates and some needed ones were found, downloaded and installed ok, so I know I am into the wireless ok, but still can not get the browsers to find websites. I get "server not found" messages every time.... thanks in advance for your help.

make sure you have no firewall blocking it, also if you have a firewall like kerio, mcafee noton etc, make sure windows firewall is turned off (i.e dont have 2 firewall's running at the same time) also try disconnecting/reconnecting as this sometimes works
