IE6 closes seemingly randomly
My IE6 running on XP Pro has today started randomly closing directly when a url is accessed or after a few pages within the first address.
I haven't knowingly changed anything. The effect was noticed during a pass through a forum.
Latest updates and patches automatically uploaded
Anyone any ideas?
Grateful for any help

Wouldn't hurt to run a HijackThis log by the Pros in that section. I see you've done it before so you know how it goes.
If you are all clear there return to this thread and we can see what else might be up.

Hi jephree
HJT and other fixes run as suggested ...PC now clean but IE windows still closing on selection.
Just viewed a best deal at the bottom of this forum page, and was shut down and had to "re-arrive"here and re-type this.
It seemed to have stopped after the clean-up, but no such luck !!!!

Does just the source site close or does IE itself close? Any error message?
See if you can force this and note the time. Or since you mention your last post look for errors that occurred @ February 17 2006 6:50 PM.
Look in your Event viewer: rt. click My Computer then click Manage then Event Viewer.
Or: Administrative Tools/Event Viewer or Start/Run/ eventvwr
Open the system as well as the application tabs & look for X errors. Click error line for details.
Post back the source & event id & Description especially of errors that seem to coincide with this issue.
Also check the Information lines that might coincide with this issue.
How to view and manage event logs in Event Viewer in Windows XP
Also view your Error Log via:
[1] Start Menu
[2] Help and Support
[3] Pick a Task
[4] Tools
[5] Advanced System Information
[6] View the Error Log

Hi,
I didn't come back immediately as when I viewed the event viewerno errors were displayed following a shut-down.There have been several occurances but the event.
There are plenty of errors reported back over the months in the Error log and the following is a copy of today spanning a number IE shut downs
18 February 2006 Service Control Manager The ONC/RPC Portmapper service failed to start due to the following error: The service did not start due to a logon failure.

19 February 2006 Service Control Manager The BHMonitorService service was unable to log on as .\Dj with the currently configured password due to the following error: Logon failure: unknown user name or bad password. To ensure that the service is configured properly, use the Services snap-in in Microsoft Management Console (MMC).

There is also a repeated error on a number of occasions reporting a bad block on HDD0
several HUNDRED on the 18th which may explain why defrag using Norton got stuck and had to be aborted.
18 February 2006 Disk The device, \Device\Harddisk0\D, has a bad block.

Can you identify the Bell & Howell software that is running? Are you familiar with it? Perhaps stop it from running and or starting for a test.
Also the Bad Block raises issues about your hard drives health although I don't see how this relates directly to the IE issue.
I would first off run a check disk:
start > run > cmd
in the new window type chkdsk/f
when prompted to run on boot choose Y & reboot
this will check for & fix any disk errors.
You can also run the manufacturers diagnostic. If you do not know your hard drive manufacturer this scan will show it under Drives:
http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html
There is a list of the major manufacturers here:
http://www.tacktech.com/display.cfm?ttid=287
-
chkdsk/f ran - no fault found
Samsung hdd diagnostics (Hutil.exe)would not run beyond disk identification.
The Bell and Howell is part of an electronic parts catalogue of Vauxhall/opel and has been on line for some time before this closedonw effect started.
The pc has now noticeable slowed down its start up, taking approx 30 -40 secs to populate the icons on the desktop and finish the loading processes.
Very useful that belarc site!!

Dear Jephree,
Please Ignore the pc speed slow-up as this was not related.
I've individually and collectively turned off and modified firewalls, av and security and privacy settings to no avail.
one close down that is consistant is :
from Google home page ---> search sutton scotney --->select url
www.city-visitor.com/suttonscotney/index.html
And IE invariably closes.
Any ideas on how I can proceed now?

And again....
When I select the above url for sutton scotne, from within the context of the above reply then I arrive at the site and IE does not close down.

you may want to download and run LSPFix
as well as reregister your internet explorer dlls
1. Quit all programs that are running.
2. Click Start, and then click Run.
3. Type regsvr32 /i urlmon.dll, and then click OK.
4. When you receive the "DllRegisterServer in urlmon.dll succeeded" message, click OK.
If this does not resolve the problem, repeat steps 2 through 4 for each of the following files (in step 3, replace Urlmon.dll with each of the file names below):
· Shdocvw.dll
· Msjava.dll
· Actxprxy.dll
· Oleaut32.dll
· Mshtml.dll
· Browseui.dll
· Shell32.dll
