Wireless "Connected," But Browsers Don't Work

I'm in the U.S. connected via wireless (I show that I have a connection and the signal strength is "excellent") on my Dell Inspiron Windows XP, yet when I open my browsers (internet explorer and netscape), I cannot get onto any website ("<insert website name here>" cannot be found. Please check the address and try again.). What gives?

First of all check that you don't have a firewall blocking the connection.

    Jaynee,

Thanks for the reply. No, I do not have a firewall blocking the connection.

I would like to also add, that I can I plug in the broadband cable into my computer from the router and I get on the internet just fine.

However, the wireless connection still poses a problem. It says it's "connected," as well as having "good" to "excellent" signal strength. But, when I open either my browsers, I get the "check name" message as I alluded to in the initial posting.

I've started my computer over. I've run a virus check, I update virus definitions, etc. I don't know what else to try.

P.S. My roommate has no problem using the router to access her wireless internet.

    jovikaz,

I don't think this will help you, but this is what happened to me. I have a 2Wire box for our wireless. It's hooked up to a former roomie's computer that neither my current roomie or I use. The internet address we had on our telephone/wireless account was being used by the former roomie from another location. We didn't know she was using the address. She kept changing the password and we kept changing it back on her old computer without even realizing it. Now, we share the password, so she continues using the address and we have our wireless ...

    Good Luck, anyways!

Save 20% on AVG Internet Security 2012 Suite!
    just a suggestion really ....

incase you have an anti virus specially norton , then you must disable it .
right click on norton icon on system tray (next to the clock) , select disable .

Shezroonie , ive worked for wanadoo , they usually wudnt help you as youre using a wireless other than their own but anyway it is possible for a router to show connectivity even when your not really connected .
if you think its a problem with browser only then try connecting to a messenger service and check its response. good luck .
