Internet explorer- detecting proxy settings no wireless internet

Im running BT broadband in the UK and have ME on a P2 laptop compaq armada 7400 and using BT 1065 PCI laptop card and 1800 voyager BT/ 2 wire hub network. The card works fine on my other laptop which is a P2 running 98SE but with 64mb ram instead of 128 on main one.
Therefore i think problem is software based- the wireless signal appears on desktop and card leds respond but when trying internet explorer it spends a while "detecting proxy settings" before dislpaying page cannot be displayed error. Ive tried matching settings on control panel/ hardware configuration between two comps not immedaietly obvious what porblem is. THe only thing i can think of is that its a ME related issue as the laptop had a new install of mE just bfefore i got it second hand. I can use the laptop on the 2wire/BT HPNA usb adaptor but really want wireless access.

further to poss issue of ME installation...
I tried upgrading laptop to XP but it seemed to suggest a file was missing something 386. However the computer seems to run everything else fine although the cd drive is a bit slow.

    Any help appreciated.
