hey,
I recently started uni and so in order to connect to the internet here I had to make some adjustments to my internet settings...ever since I set up the internet here, Ive not been able to update AVG, adaware (error retrieving update) or use the trend micro house call online scanner, as it wont load. it just says "failure of generic host" or something.
this problem with the not being able to update, etc has been going on ever since i had to mess around with my IE and internet settings to set up this damn hallnet service for internet at uni.
i did in fact do an adaware scan (with out of date definitions) and it found:
WIN32.TROJANDOWNLOADER.AGENT.DE
»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»
obj[12]=Regkey : retro64_loader.r64loader
obj[13]=Regkey : retro64_loader.r64loader.1
i did quarrantine it though...anyway, any help is appreciated!
thanks in advance!
p.s. i already had a HJT log checked out and it's clean
Can you specify your exact hallnet service?
e.g. http://www.google.com/search?q=hallnet
Can you recall exactly what you did when you "had to make some adjustments to my internet settings"?
Are you running a firewall other than the SP2 wall? Are you running the SP2 wall?
What is the level of security settings via: Tools | Internet Options | Security ?
Medium?
hey, thanks for quick reply...
the hallnet service is loughborough university's hallnet service...
exactly what I did I can't remember now, but all the setup instructions are here: http://www.lboro.ac.uk/computing/hallnet/stepxp.html
(e.g things like: "Network (TCP/IP) Configuration" and "Configure Internet Explorer 5 or 6 to use the Web Cache" are the steps where I had to change settings the most I think...)
Im only running the SP2 firewall. I was running norton internet security's firewall until I uninstalled norton because it was causing a lot of problems.
my security setting appear to be on a custom level...although I have never changed them. Privacy is on 'medium' though...
Hope some of this helps in solving this! I wouldn't mind having AVG back and being able to update adaware se!
It appears to me that your Hallnet relies heavily on its' own antivirus software:
I wonder if maybe it is not compatible with outside scanners etc.Loughborough University uses Network Associates' T.V.D. (McAfee) as its standard computer virus detection and prevention software.
It does mention Stinger which is of course McAfee:

Perhaps a quick question to one of the staff there would be the most expedient route:
