    no internet connection

I tried to download a screensaver. after downloading our adware detector came up so I clicked remove. Now I can't get an Internet connection. I have checked our connections and they seem to be fine ~ I have no idea what I removed! It just came up in a RED box so I clicked remove. I assumed it had something to do with the screensaver I had downloaded. We have Windows XP and DSL hook-up. Any suggestions? thanks, porringer

Try a System Restore to a point prior to this download.

    Start/Run/ %systemroot%\system32\restore\rstrui.exe

My husband tried what you suggested and it didn't work. Can you offer any other suggestions? I'm really in the dog house with this one! Thank you.

Well that was the easy try.

When you say that you cannot get a connection: what exactly happens?

Any error messages? Are you able to connect to your DSL?

my husband said it says something like not being able to reset the IP address...

When clicking on Internet Explorer I get the white page that says "This page cannot be displayed" then when I scroll down to the bottom it says "cannot find server or DNS Error Internet Explorer"

Everything else on the computer seems to be fine ~ we just can't get a connection to the Internet on the main computer. I am using a computer we have networked to connect to the Internet

I'm really not good at all the computer stuff ~ but my husband is UPSET and will barely talk to me about it. So, you'll need to talk in lay mans terms!!

    choose RUN

    type in: cmd

    enter:

in the new window type: ipconfig /renew

    enter.

ok ... i am following this ... that was an expected error ...

unfortunately the troubleshooting only gets more complex but we can try

I need to know 2 things:

    1. Do you have SP2 on this machine?

    2. Do you have a full version XP CD?

    I don't know what an SP2 is

I don't know if we have a full XP CD ~ Like I said, I'm not much help.

I would have access to an XP CD from work (I think)

My husband went to bed ~ he would probably know what you mean by the SP2...

Save 20% on AVG Internet Security 2012 Suite!
    SP2 is Service Pack 2.

Right click on My Computer then click Properties

Under System: XP: do you see Service Pack 2?
