    BT Broadband won't install

I have an old HP Pavilion 8685 desktop that I've previously used with a dial-up connection. A few months ago I got BT broadband and managed to install it but after loading the BT homepage I couldn't access any other pages. It works perfectly on my girlfriends older laptop. I was advised to try using Mozilla Firefox instead of IE 6 and at first this seemed to work but one morning I couldn't connect to the internet. I tried uninstalling BT broadband but when I tried to re-install it I got to the stage where the computer needs to restart and when it did the broadband installation was not responding. Any ideas?

I know it's 50p a minute, which is very frustrating, but the BT Broadband helpdesk are pretty good (well, they were when I had to phone them). And it hasn't been outsourced to India yet!

As there's no specific error message or anything, this is a relatively vague problem to try to diagnose. The only things I can think of are:

    1. Are you sure your system meets the minimum requirements? I'd say that you'd need a 500MHz PC with 128Mb RAM if you're running Windows 2000 or XP.
    2. Try clearing out the files in your Temp folder. This will be in C:\Windows\Temp if you're on Windows 98 / ME or it will be in "C:\Documents and Settings\Your login name\Local Settings\Temp" if you're on Windows 2000 or XP. Reboot after that.
    3. Have you got enough free disk space?

Let us know if that helps

Thanks for the advice. I rang the helpline (£8!!!) and they were pretty helpful. It turned out to be something to do with XP, which I've had to re-install, and it seems to be OK now. I still think it's a bit cheeky of BT to charge their customers premium rates when we're paying £30 monthly but what can you do...

Yeah, I know what you mean. I was determined not to ring the helpdesk out of principal but, when I concluded that it was definitely some kind of account setup problem and nothing that I had done wrong, I had to give them a call. Took 12 minutes of being on hold and then getting them to sort it but, at the end of the day, if someone had said "Give me £6 and I'll fix it for you and stop you being annoyed", then I would have given it to them to avoid the inconvenience of it not working. So it's worth it when you look at it that way. But it would be nice if you could buy the BT Broadband service and it worked when you installed it!

Glad to hear you've got it working now
