Greetings,
I am running win xp and on saturday I my internet connection died.... I assumed that there was a problem with the general network as NTL my service provider said they where having major problems in my area so I thought no more about it that day... however sunday evening I called again to be informed the service was back to normal and the their tests showed my modem was working fine. they took me through several steps in dos to renew my IP adress as the one my PC was showing was an invalid and suggested that I tried to connect via USB rather than the ethernet which i dutifully did to be told my network card was probably at fault. I checked out the card and the pc said it was working fine but to be on the safe side I tried to uninstall and reinstall but discovered .... not exactly sure why I couldnt do it. I found out when I opened the box that I have an asrock m/board and the network card is part of the main board so I dont know if that the reason it wouldnt allow me to uninstall etc..
so so to err on the side of caution purchased a new network card hooked it up and alas still no service....
at this point I would also point out that I tried a system restore and took out recent files from ad awear to see if that helped...
basically the after several conversations I am told I need to take the pc to "pc world" (they are havin a laugh) and they will reinsatll pcp/ip files...however the computer says I have a dcph file problem is it one and the same thing??....
somebody please.... do you have an idea or am I beyond help the last thing I want to do is pay £50 to somebody to reformat my hhd surely there must be a fix out there somewhere far far away in a distant galaxy ..........
Hello,
The first thing I'd try is. Go to Start>>Run>>type CMD. Once you're in CMD (a black screen) type in ipconfig /release. After typing that, wait 20 seconds and then type ipconfig /renew. After that is done, try typing ping google.com , if you do not receive four replies, then it did not work.
Let me know if that works.

Thanx for your reply,
that was one of the first things I tried... without success...
Did you mean DHCP?Originally Posted by Jacam

What is the exact error message?
yes DHCP sorry seems as though I had a moment of dyslexia.
I will check when I get home and post it tomorrow, thanx for your patience....
Hi,
I have had to reinstall windows to resolve the issue, basically the dhcp/ip files had been corrupted by spyware and as I was running xp home was unable to reinstall. Have now up gradge to xp pro and am also using in conjunction with ad awear the microsoft anti spyware beta version which is free.
Thanks for trying to help.
