Trouble with 2 websites; 1 Java app the other pics
Hello,
I have three problems I have been banging my head against the wall trying to figure out with no success. I was hoping someone here could help.
Before I launch here are some details: Win XP SP2; Cable Modem; D-Link DI-524 Gateway Router; Norton Internet Security, IE6, SUN JRE 1.5.0_2. All software packages and driver are fully up to date and window firewall is off.
Problem 1: I go to a site regularly (www.cylon.org) to visit thier forum for scifi banter; however, all of the sudden, none of the button pictures or graphics will show up. I have tried everything. Turning off norton, checking the norton firewall settings, checking IE privacy settings, lowering IE security settings. I don't know what to do. It seems only to happen on this web site for me, and it does work from the computer at my office. Any Ideas?
Problem 2: When going to my IE security settings, when I tried to move the setting from medium to low; it gave me an error box and said moving below the default value was not reccomended. It only had an ok button and would not let me make the setting lower. To decrease the setting I had to use customize. Why does it offer the choice and deny my this way....makes me think something is wrong.
Problem 3: The other website giving me a problem is (http://www.friscoisd.org/hr/supportapp.htm). At the bottom of this page is a button to gen an on-line work app. When I click it nothing happens. I have gone to java test sites, and they all say my java is working. Java apps run fine on other sites. I do not understand why this site is a problem. I tried similar things as stated in Problem 1 but also to no avail. I also uninstalled and reinstalled my Sun JRE from scratch. MS JVM is not on my machine. And again, it works from the machine at my office.
I can't help but think all of these problems have one root. I hope someone here can help me because I'm at my wits end. If i just thought 2 web pages weren't working I wouldn't worry...but I think this tells a story of a greater problem with my browser/security software.
I would like to mention that I am neither affiliated with nor advertising either website listed above. I simply read one and my wife is trying to apply for a job on the other.
Thank you very much for your time.

Just a quick response to ? #2.
The error message is normal. You cannot lower settings that way.
You need to enter Custom & then reset the level there.
As to your links they work on my end although the cylon buttons have no graphics, just text.
And your posted link to friscoisd got corrupted by a lingering ")"
But with that removed I can get the application.
Will look further & hopefully someone else might have an idea.

have you tried clearing your tempory internet files? i know it sounds stupid but it works some times.
problem 3, check the permissions on the Java aplet, if there is not a problem with this i believe its some what connected to problem 2.
have you tried another browser as a short term answer, allowing your wife to do the application? one that is recomended by some it experts is www.getfirefox.com

Thank you for your answers so far. If what is going on which problem 2 is normal then that is a little bit of a relief if not annoying.
As far as did I try firefox, the answer is no, I don't really plan to use that browser so I didnt install it. Although I did contemplate doing that. I did use my computer at work to do my wife's application. We did it over the phone...she talked and I took dictation. So there is no fire drill, I just want to know why these are not working on my machine when they seem to work on every other machine in the free world.
Also, I did kill the cache. I regularly clean out the cache, history, and cookies on my machine. When it comes to my computer, I'm a neat freak and like it to be clean. That way it always runs better.
I have reviewed java applet permissions. They are enabled on IE/MS Security and my norton firewall is set to let java applets run without prompting. If there is more to do to check applet permissions let me know and I will veryify those as well, but this is what I know to look for. I have also made both sites trusted sites on my norton firewall.
Thank You both for responding.

how long have you been having these problems?

Everything worked fine until about 2-3 weeks ago. My registry had become corrupted and go figure I didnt have a backup. That was stupid. Anyway, long story short, I couldn't even boot my machine in safe mode.
I ended up doing a repir from my xp disk. Well that screwed everything up royally. But the computer did boot up fine. Just everything was still lunched. It got confused as everything was out of sync. The machine couldnt make up its mind if it wanted to be sp2 or not and I wasnt able to help it figure out. That is when this problem started.
NOW...here is the interesting thing. I decided it is time for a new HD and a fresh start anyway. So I pulled my drive and reinstalled XP and office from scratch on the new hard drive and updated them to current. To my suprise, the problem with the cylon page persisted even though there was nothing of the old system on my new machine at all. I figured it was related to my security permissions or my gateway router at this point.
As far as the application not loading, that happened after all these events, so I cannot say that it has changed because I don't know. What i do know is it works on every computer I sit down to except for this one.
I would like to try this with my gateway router out of the loop. I tried but i didnt get a connection when i bypassed the router. Since verything is set for dhcp and automatic dns configuration, i thought it should just work...but it did not.
anyway that is the history. I didnt give a lot of that back fill because the machine is basically new. I only have xp sp2, office 2003, norton internet secutiry, and spybot on the machine right now. So i dont understand, particualry on the cylon page.
Finally, i do not have the MS JVM on my machine at all. Are there some things that require that and won't run just on the sun jre? What reasons are there for the graphics not to load on that one website? Why won't a java app on the other website not run but all others seem to work? These are the things i cant answer and make me worry about my machine's health.
Hope this long winded answer of mine is able to provide you with something to wrap your noodle around. Ii will be happy to supply any additional information that is needed to help solve this.
thanks,
DV

Just a simple thought:
Have you installed the latest Sun Java JRE 5.0 ?
Even if so: perhaps reinstall it.
