refurbished laptop just need to get on the internet
I purchased a refurbished laptop for my sister in law who has siactia nerve cancer and is unable to walk. She just sits all day, thought a laptop would help entertain her but, I can not get the pc to connect to the internet. It is an ibm think pad, it has windows 95 on it and aol 3.0, thought all i had to do was connect to the internet and download some newer programs, but the aol dials but only goes to step 2 and i can not add a new connection, because it says to insert a disc. the other connection i have keeps saying no dial tone. I really need to get this working for my sister in law. can anyone help?

What disc does it ask for?

95 cd rom i downloaded one but when used it says pppmac vdx not found

That message is something to do with cabinet files .
What do you mean when you say AOL dials but only gets to step 2?
What is the other connection that you have?

okay this is where i am now , the aol was 3.0 so i wiped it out and started with peoplepc, downloaded on to my pc then downloaded to a 3.5 floppy then loaded on to the laptop.the dial up networking was not on the l/t so i downloaded explorer from my pc on to l/t. got all the way to checking user name and password at peoplepc and it said i needed a proxy server. tech at ppc had me look for one but couldn't find on l/p, she said to contact IBM for the proxy, now i have no idea what a proxy is or why i need one. i'm just one step away from getting my sister in law on the www, and i am stuck in the mudd. iit took me a total of about 30 hours to get to where i am. really appreciate you answering my question thanks

I don't understand why they would tell you to contact IBM.
A lot of ISPs use proxy servers but you don't have to go hunting to find one yourself. I would get back in touch with peoplepc.
EDIT: Unless they think that you have something on the laptop that is interfering with it's ability to connect. Keep us updated please.
