    Angry Windows Explorer problem messages

Everytime I right click on the C drive to properties I get an error message saying Windows Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close. How do I fix this problem?

Try clicking on the Start Menu and then the Run item. In the 'Run' box, type SFC and click OK.

This runs System File Checker and will give you the option to scan for altered files. In other words, if there is a corrupted or missing file in your Windows installation, it will replace it. Please note, however, that it will replace ALL system files with the original versions - therefore, if you have any applications or updates that have installed newer files, these may be affected. Also note, that you'll want to see if there's an option to prompt you for each file that it is going to replace - if there is, switch this off, as it will be checking hundreds of files!

Once you've done this, see if it resolves the problem and then run Windows Update to ensure that all Microsoft patches are still correctly installed for Windows XP (if you don't want to install XP Service Pack 2, choose the Custom Installation rather than the Express Installation).

Let us know if that helps

After I put SFC in the Run box and clicked OK I see a black screen flash very fast then disappears.

It looks like System File Checker is a bit different in Windows XP to how it is in Windows 2000, which is what I'm used to. Try typing SFC /scannow instead

After I put in SFC /scannow I keep getting insert the XP CD message even after unchecking hide protected operating system files. When I put the CD in how do you find folders such as I386?
I see 4 choices: Install Windows XP, Install optional Windows Components, Perform additional tasks and check system compatibility. Also, how do I put I386 in the system root?

To just use the CD to run sfc /scannow you don't want the CD to actually run so when you get the 4 choice screen choose EXIT.
    (Leaving the CD in drive.)

Then click the "Retry" button from sfc /scannow. You may have to "retry" more than once per prompt.

To find folders & files on the CD choose "Perform Additional Tasks" & then "Browse this CD". You will then see the folder I386.

To install on disk follow the steps from the above link.

I copied the I386 folder into my C drive. Changed the sourcepatch to C:\ Restarted my computer and ran scannow sfc without a message asking for the XP CD. The problem I'm still having is when I right click on the C drive then properties I get the windows explorer has encountered a problem message. Any fixes for this? Should I reinstall XP again?

What I see in searching is software conflict. Are any of the following relavent to you? Also: is this a new problem? Were you able to view properties previously? Here are a few posts & a general search:

Thanks for the suggestion, but I didn't need to try it. The problem was
finally solved for good. The culprit was Spy Sweeper. I purchased this
program after it won a PC Mag Editor's Choice over Spybot S&D and Adaware.
It really is a good program, but, by default, it adds a spyware sweep option
to the context (right-click) menus in Windows Explorer. Overriding that
default and removing that option from the context menu immediately and
totally resolved the problem I was having in Explorer, My Computer, and the
    Disk Management Console.
I notified Webroot Software of the bug, and I hope they address it.

In the meantime, it's possible to keep using Spy Sweeper because that
context-menu option is never used, anyway. The developer's initial approach
to this problem should be simply changing the default behavior of this
option in Spy Sweeper so that it's OFF.
Solved! After posting the last message about Neroshx.dll, I checked the KB
and found nothing, however a Google search showed that the file was part of
Nero Burnning ROM. I uninstalled Nero and it all works fine.

I didn't get any advisories on Nero when running the upgrade advisor, and
they may have a patch for it, but I'm just glad to get it working, and I
    have EZCD which works fine.

Thanks to those who replied so promptly. All this time, and just a little
detective work would have fixed it, having to post the details to the NG was
what led me to the answer.
One possible cause of this is upgrading over a 9x system that had a
rather early version of the Windows 'Target Context' Powertoy in it, so
I would investigate the way to remove that.
    Start - Run - regedit.exe
    Open to
    HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\lnkfile\shellex\ContextMenuHandl ers
and if when you click the + of that, there is a sub-key TargetContext,
    highlight it and delete
    microsoft.public.windowsxp.general

    Also:

    right click closes explorer
