"Cannot find server" message in IE6

    Hi all,
I just upgraded from Windows ME to XP and installed microsoft Office. This morning (after upgrading everything last night), I'm finding that when I initially go to a new web site i get the "cannot find server" message, but if I refresh once or twice, I can find it....anyone know what my computer is doing this, and how to fix it? I don't know if it has anything to do with the new software, but it wasn't happening yesterday, so that's all I can think of.
    Thanks in advance!

What Service Pack do you have for XP?

Also what Service Pack for IE?

Does this happen on every site?

Are you browsing from within Office or independently?

Is the behavior the same within Office as without?

I'm using XP with the service pack 1
Internet Explorer 6, i think, although I just tried to find out which one by looking at the properties, and I can't seem to find it.
The problem happens on random pages, lots of times when I'm trying to link, but also if I'm going to my home page (google) etc.
So far this has all been happening just from IE, I haven't been doing anything from inside office.
    Any suggestions?

sorry, thats XP with SP2 on it. I just double checked that all my windows updates have been completed, so I assume I did that one two (although does that mean I skipped over SP1?)

XP SP2 will have incorporated XP SP1 & should have the latest IE6 which is IE6 SP1.

    Are you on a Network?
Tools > Internet Options > Connections > LAN Settings: uncheck automatic detection.

    What is your connection?

Try Tools > Internet Options > Advanced > Restore Defaults
Also Tools > Internet Options > Security > Default

Is there a difference when you link from:
    1. a typed url
    2. a url embeded in a page
    3. a url in your favorites

Do the same pages repeatedly not respond or is it totally random?

Instead of the refresh button try pressing Ctrl + F5

After you do that once & leave the page; do you have any problem going back to that page?

    Sorry for all the questions

& oops! forgot to ask about firewalls?
you have XP SP2 firewall on? Any other firewall?

ok, I reset the defaults you mentioned, unchecked the automatic settings under lan settings.
it seems to be pretty random as to whether its from a link or typed url (I dont have any favs yet since I just got my computer back). no network connections yet either.
I have the SP2, IE firewall turned on, the other firewall I have is part of my security pack from my school and its symantec firewall, but i have that turned off in case they were conflicting.
i just played with it for 5 minutes after the changes, and didn't see any problems....maybe that fixed everything? i'll check back in tomorrow and let you know.
do you buy any chance have any experience with mozilla? i heard thats the one to use now due to security issues with ie, but last time i had it on this computer, i was running into the same problem (cannot find page error). i haven't tried anything but ie, especially since even that wasn't working right...do you recommend getting it and giving it a shot?
    Thanks!

    Firefox Yes!

    http://www.mozilla.org/

At least you will be able to isolate problems to browser or your own connection or your other settings.

It is good to have both.

You say upgraded... did you do a format before installing XP? It's not a good idea to just upgrade to another OS without formatting.
