too many browsers open at start

    Hello expert type people,

I'm struggling. For a long time now the following has been happening and I don't know how to solve it:

When I (single) click on the IE icon on the desktop, 2, sometimes 3, browsers/homepages open up. Admittedly, it's not the biggest problem, shutting down the excess pages, just a bit of a pain.

    Any ideas?

    Thanks

Is the IE icon-text underlined? If yes, that means your Desktop icons are configured to launch with a single-click instead of the more usual and default double-click. That could be causing your problem. Try changing the icons back to double-click execution:

    Windows XP
    ------------
Start -- Control Panel (switch to Classic view) -- Folder Options:

Click the radio-button "Single click to open at item". [OK]

    Hi,
Yeah, I'm actually 98se and have been using this pc for 4 years - I can't really remember when it started, I think it's been quite some time tho, but not since original purchase.
I reconfigured to single click the day I installed the PC - everything is single click, so naturally I only single click the ie icon (which is underlined).
My guess is it's something to do with the registry, you know, 2 or 3 diff places responding to the single click IE desktop icon reqest.

    Thanks

actually, now I come to mention it - if I single click open a new word document, sometimes 2 or 3 open too....
    any ideas?

After much searching the few finds I've found all suggest Spyware Adware Virus etc.

    Just to check that possibility:
