invalid syntax error on ie when pc turned on
I am getting an invalid syntax error and it appears every time I turn on my computer.
It says the page cannot be displayed. The page you are looking for might have been removed or had its name changed. Then it says to open the overland-PTCE MR 1 2 home page, then look for links to the information I want. It won't let me do that, but I don't understand it, anyway.
Can someone help?

There are some problems with SP2 as they relate to killing other software.
Although it does not mention IE but have a look at this MS article on the subject as it may give some perspective on your problem.It is entitled "Programs that are known to experience a loss of functionality when they run on a Windows XP Service Pack 2-based computer
-
Looks to me like you've got a Browser Hijack there. This is the tell-tale line:
O1 - Hosts: By Option^Explicit, techcd@shaw.ca12.129.205.209 search.netscape.com12.129.205.209 sitefinder.verisign.com
and all those bizarre lines above it, which are all commented lines from Microsoft's sample hosts file, which it seems is what was used to hijack your Internet Explorer.
If you have knowingly changed your home page to a web directory site called Incredifind, then please ignore all of my comments. Otherwise, I suggest you run HiJack This again and select the following lines to be removed:
O1 - Hosts: Usage Information:
O1 - Hosts: Save Changes - Save any changes you make to hosts file
O1 - Hosts: Reset Default - Will Replace any existing Hosts with a Windows Default one, original file doesn't have to exist
O1 - Hosts: Save Log - Will Save the Hosts as a Text file, Good for Posting
O1 - Hosts: __________________________________________________ _______________
O1 - Hosts: Enable and Disable - Will Swap Hosts Files On the Fly for those that want to use Hosts, and Temporarily Disable it.
O1 - Hosts: __________________________________________________ _______________
O1 - Hosts: Scan for Hosts - Will Search your Windows Drive for Hosts Files, useful if Hosts is in wrong location or installed to Alternate location by Trojan.
O1 - Hosts: Delete - Does exactly that, Delete and Hosts File Selected in the Listbox.
O1 - Hosts: __________________________________________________ _______________
O1 - Hosts: By Option^Explicit, techcd@shaw.ca12.129.205.209 search.netscape.com12.129.205.209 sitefinder.verisign.com
and this one:
O10 - Hijacked Internet access by New.Net
Have you knowingly signed up to a survey site or some other such web site that asks you for your feedback on consumer products? If not, go into Control Panel, then Add/Remove Programs. Look for entries for "Consumer Input" and "Survey Alerts Manager". If they're in the list, highlight them and click the 'Remove' button.
This line might be dodgy but I'm not sure yet:
O2 - BHO: PBlockHelper Class - {4115122B-85FF-4DD3-9515-F075BEDE5EB5} - C:\Program Files\SlipStream Web Accelerator\PBHELPER.DLL
Once you've dealt with that lot, restart your PC, don't open any other programs, then run HiJack This and post a new log here.
Hope it helps

PBHelper.DLL is a legitimate pop-up blocker. I've also now found out that Consumer Input is legitimate software which does not get installed without a user's knowledge.
This log looks OK to me now. Are you still getting the same problem?
-
Thanks.
Yes, I am still getting the same error. It shows up whenever the computer is turned on and I'm not even on Internet Explorer yet. Invalid syntax error.
I hope you have another thought on this - it's annoying.
Thanks and have a great day!

Do you have web content on your Windows XP desktop, e.g. when your PC boots up and shows you the desktop icons, does it automatically connect to the Internet and show you an up-to-date weather report or stock market share prices or something like that from the Internet?
If not, try this:
Right-click a blank space on your desktop;
Select Properties from the context menu;
Go to the Web tab;
Un-tick the box labelled 'Show web content on my active desktop'.
Reboot and see if that resolves it.

I do have the weather channel icon on, but I have to connect to the internet before it shows me anything. Would that cause it? I did just recently install it.
Also, when I right click on the desktop, I get properties, but then I'm not seeing the other things you mentioned to use.
Any other suggestions?
Thanks.
