    can I add more memory?

hi everyone. I thought I would add even more memory (I already have 512mb's)to my pc, because I kept reading everywhere that 'you can't have too much memory'. but my problems this. I thought my memory would be on one stick with the 512mb's on it. however when I opened my machine it was on two 256 sticks and there wasn't another slot for anymore. I've now read somewhere that I might not be able to put a single 512 stick in one of the slots. but I can't find out about my motherboard. when i use a program called cpu-z to check my specs it is blanked out. so I was wondering, before I bought any more memory whether my machine could in fact accept any more memory.

    my memory goes like this. 2x256mb DDR-SDRam (Samsung) pc 2100 133mhz Dimm1

I also have 80gb HD and a 2000+ athlon processor

You can download Aida32 from my sig, install and run it. It will tell you what your motherboard is. Then you can research its capabilities.

Some older motherboards would only accept 512Mb maximum (e.g. the 2 x 256Mb that you've got now) but that was quite a long time ago and, if you're using DDR RAM, then your motherboard must be pretty modern. I would be surprised if you couldn't fit more than 512Mb DDR RAM onto the board.

...... though I do wonder why you've currently got 2 x 256Mb and not 1 x 512Mb, which would have been cheaper to supply. Have you already increased the memory before or is this how it left the factory?

In any case, Tassie Devil is right - you really need to run a tool like Aida32 to find out exactly what model (and revision number if applicable) of motherboard is fitted, otherwise no-one could really advise you confidently.

hi guys. thanks for the info. love the aida tool. it's excellent. my pc is two years old and no i haven't even looked inside it since i picked it up from Time computers. so i was totally bemused too as to why they'd choose to use two 256's instead of one 512mb block. using aida i found out my motherboard manfacturer is from microstar international. My motherboard Properties go like this.

p.s i'm not very good at this sort of thing so if you wonderful folk wouldn't mind getting your hands dirty under the hood of my machine and informing me how i now go about finding out the info i need i would be most grateful.

Just been having a look at your latest post (been rather busy the last couple of days) but data on your MSI motherboard is proving a little hard to find. I may have to carry on later tonight. Pretty confident that it will take 2Gb or more but best to be sure.

    Hi Joey,

It sounds as if we have very similar (if not the same!) Time Computers - did you have any luck in increasing your memory?

I'm a bit confused by this link

    http://www.pcx.com.ph/showcase/profile.asp?id=165

    where it says:

    [The Ms 6382 can:]
"Support four memory banks using two 184-pin DDR DIMM
Support a maximum memory size of 2GB
    Support 2.5v SDRAM DIMM"

How can it support 4 memory banks if there are only 2 DIMM sockets?
    http://www.pcx.com.ph/showcase/profile.asp?id=165

Any help you can give would be appreciated

    John Latter
