When you say you "then try logging online", do you mean that you are not connected to the Internet when you are listening to music in Windows Media Player and then, when you try to dial up and connect to your ISP, it doesn't work? Does it give you an error message? Or does it connect but not display any web pages in Internet Explorer? Are you able to send and receive emails after using Media Player?

    Hmmm

So there's no error message. So what are the symptoms that cause you to say it's not working? Does it dial up to the ISP but not connect to the ISP? To connect to the Internet, are you using a Dial-Up Networking connection that you've created or are you using special software that the ISP supplied to you, e.g. AOL, Tesco.net, Freeserve, etc.?

A screengrab would be REALLY useful.

If your ISP gave you software to connect to the Internet, I would try re-installing it.

hi djnafey, im so sorry, yes there is an error code! i just saw it, when im playing Windows Media and then decide to log online, (I have netzero) it wont log me online and will have an error message saying "cannot log on error code 20", so i checked with the help section for error code 20 and did everything that it said to do and still i cannot get a connection online while having windows media playing...

Error Code 20 tells me to do this: Error 20 - Unable to obtain a stable connection.

    A. Try another access number

    B. Disable call waiting.

    C. Verify modem settings.

    D. Verify network settings.

    E. Try disabling v.90 protocol.

Nothing worked of all those choices I had to try and fix this problem.

It does dial up to the ISP but it does not connect.
I dont know how to make a screengrab yet. Thank you so much for reading this, I hope I can get this thing to work! Or I can just log online and not hear music with my windows media player, or hear windows media player and not be online

Just did a Google search on 'modem error 20' and it came up with just 2 useful places. The first gave all of the information that you had already obtained and tried. The second was an error 20 that someone had when they were trying to connect and they found that it was caused by their US Robotics modem - they replaced it with something different and it sorted it.

You don't have a US Robotics modem do you?

Are you on broadband / cable or a standard dial-up connection?

Had a similar problem once when on dial-up ... turns out that settings in windows (namely, internet explorer and windows media) were attempting to use internet connection (winmedia to download track information, IE to access web pages, etc) when it wasn't connected. Settings were *not* set to 'never dial a connection' like they should be, so the programs were attempting to log onto the internet ... causing interference with the ISP's software trying to do the same thing.

Might be/might not be the solution, maybe something to look into.
