HDD LED red and white wire with 2 holes
Power LED green and white wires with 3 holes

well... there are labels on the motherboard but everything is so close and all the pins on the motherboard are so close i cant tell which goes where!!

    Ash,

The floppy cable goes on with the 'split' end connected to the floppy drive. The end that plugs onto the motherboard will usually have the red stripe on the cable pointing towards the centre of the motherboard.

Your motherboard manual should show you the layout of the pins for the connectors to LEDs such as the Power LED etc.

You say the lights come on on the CDROM and CDRW and the lights near the power switch (which could be either a power light or a hard disk light) come on and go off again straight away? If you're not sure whether you've connected these LEDs up to the motherboard properly, I would probably ignore that for now.

How does it SOUND? When there's nothing on your screen and you aren't confident that the LEDs are connected correctly, you have to listen for noises:
    1. Does the system beep after a couple of seconds? One beep or several beeps?
    2. Can you hear the fan blowing as soon as you start it up and then staying on constantly?
    3. After a few seconds, can you hear the hard disk "chugging"?

Have you got any operating system installed on the hard disk or is this an all-new PC build?

floppy drive working now! the lights on
well the thing is that i dont have the manual for the mother board.
I'll tell u which lights i see on the red one on the motherboard and the red and green one near the power switch but that one comes on and then it comes off and doesnt comes back on.
no i dont hear any beeps. yes the fan is working fine and it doesnt come off. and no i dont hear any sounds from the hard disk.
    I have Wins 98.
    I dont hear any sounds

Sounds like your LEDs are wired up correctly if one of them comes on and stays on and the other one comes on briefly and then goes out - the one that stays on is the power LED and the one that goes out is the hard disk LED.

No sounds? Is the system case speaker connected to the motherboard the right way round? If the internal speaker is connected correctly, then no sounds means that your BIOS isn't reaching the POST stage where it tests hardware connections and uses a range of beeps to report errors.

You haven't explained whether this is a new system that you've just built or a replacement motherboard in an existing PC or an existing PC that used to work but has recently packed up.

Try removing the processor, memory and graphics card and re-seating them carefully but firmly in their slots.

When a PC doesn't reach the POST, it's generally caused by motherboard, processor or memory being faulty or incompatible.

I'm a little confused. Your first post said about how you've been connecting up the power plugs on the motherboard and the small wires from the system case for power switch, hard disk LED, etc. If you haven't changed any hardware, why did you need to connect stuff up that should have already been connected?

If you upgraded to Windows 98 SE recently but the PC did work after that, then that's not a factor in this problem.

If all else fails, I think the next step would be to do a "bare-bones" test - to disconnect everything from the motherboard (e.g. CD-ROM drive, hard disk, all PCI cards apart from the graphics card) and see if it switches on and displays something on the screen then. If you're not experienced in working inside PCs, then it could be awkward for us to help over the Internet but I guess your PC can't become less useful than it is already!

    hey i got it fixed
the poower supply was giving out wrong voltages and kinda damages the motherboard. I took it to a technician. I think he cleaned the board??
if u've got dust or whatever dirty on the motherboard, how can that damage it//

If your PC contains lots of dust, then I think it builds up more static electricity. Also, if the power supply has big chunky dust in it, then it might not allow the fan to spin as well as it should and, therefore, not allow stable operation.

I would never have thought of that (well, maybe I would if I had looked inside and it was filthy!). Sounds like you went to a good tech

Thanks for letting us know it's all OK
