Strange problems with new external hard drive

Hi guys ... thanks in advance for any help or advice.

    Dell Optiplex 620 ... windows xp ... 3.4 ghz ... 2 G RAM

Just installed a simpletech 640 gig external hard drive.

    Drive is working fine.

It is plug and play with no power switch.

It turns on and off automatically with the computer as an internal drive would.

    Two strange problems.

#1 >>> new hardware detected bubble showed in system tray and would not disappear.

I solved that by going to customize taskbar and select always hide.

#2 >>> when hard drive is installed and I go to Help and Support and try to view general system information, the information does not show and there is a notation ( 'undefined' is null or not an object)

I called Dell and called simpletech support and neither could find a solution.

It really is not a huge problem, but it is annoying.

And I am very curious as to why this is happening.

    Thanks

    Marc

Hi again ... I did some poking around on google and am led to believe that windows xp help and support computer information cannot handle more than 1 T byte ( 640 external plus my 500 in my computer ) and gives the 'undefined' is null or not an object message.

Anyway, I used the D-A-L hardware scan and it shows all of my computer information, so the problem is solved.

    Thanks

Have you try just partition the ext HDD on other PC with samller drive size and see if that works on the XP computer?

Before the partition, please remember to back up data to the other drive.

    hope this helps!
