Firstly, I genuinely don't know enough about computers to even know if I'm posting in the correct topic area, so apologies if I haven't.

Basically the problem is with a second hand laptop my parents have acquired; it turns on fine, the screen works etc, but it comes up with the screen you get when you've 'forced' it to shut down by holding the button down rather than a normal screen when you turn it on. It then gives you the options to run normally, or in various 'safe' modes. Which ever option you choose, it says 'files loading' (or something to that effect), then the screen goes black and all you can see is the mouse, and all the power lights etc are still on.

Anyone know how I can fix this?

If there is no data needed on the HDD, try boot from OS CD and follow the procedure to format HDD and reinstall the OS.
