PC Boot problems (ASUS P4S333 Motherboard)

My PC won’t boot, just hangs in ASUS Splashscreen. Went away for the weekend and PC was powered off.

I tried going into BIOS set-up but it takes an age to go into set-up when spashscreen on screen.

BIOS looks OK but altered boot sequence so it boots from CD-ROM instead of hard disc but no change.

Then removed ASUS Splashscreen setting and note that PC hangs after displaying two lines of information on the screen: -
    . BIOS information
    . Processor information.

    Any ideas?

    CPU, PSU or what?

BTW it was a new PSU about 6 weeks ago.

    Any help will be appreciated.

    Thanks & regards.

I would think that the next part of the BIOS test would be the RAM. So it could be getting stuck at the CPU test but more likely the RAM test.

Why did you change the PSU recently? That might be significant.

If you can get online from another PC where you can burn a CD (or perhaps record onto a floppy disc), try to find a bootable memory tester, e.g. something like the popular MEMTEST application if it comes with a boot image that you can download.

    Thank you for your response.

Before I went to bed and before I read your response I powered up the PC again and it stopped at the same point as earlier. I left it and when I got up this morning, hey-presto it had booted fully.

I did a system restart from XP and it rebooted but stopped again, this time after showing the BIOS information but before showing the processor information. I left it and it completed the boot and loaded XP fully after waiting a few minutes at that point. I ran a backup, just in case, and am now using the PC OK.

Still would like to know what the problem is.

BTW which MEMTEST are you referring too? Is it MEMTEST 4.0 from MemTest: RAM reliability tester for Windows or MEMTEST86 from Memtest86.com - Memory Diagnostic

I replaced the PSU as it died. Powered off PC when we went on holiday, came back and PC had no power whatsoever. New PSU and all OK. I had had the PC for around 7 years now so basing it on previous experience it seems about normal. I have fully powered off/on several time when going way from home without problem and without this issue.

I have another PC so could burn CDs when my main PC is broken but having a bootable CD if my PC will not get up to looking at boot device may not help ;-)

    Thanks & regards

    Hi,

Booting issues might be caused by power supply problems. If you plug in some other power cord, the laptop might turn on. This may be because the supply of power from the wall socket is not proper as per the needs of your laptop, or the cable that you are using with the laptop is damaged or broken from inside. You may try by changing the power cord or using another wall socket to power your PC. This can prove to be of great help most of the times.

Thank you for your interest and response. However, it is a long time ago since I raised this issue. As I said earlier the problem went away and has not reoccurred. Also, the problem was on a desktop PC not a laptop.
