*computer novice at work ~ Please be patient!*
I just got a new graphics tablet for my birthday, nice. I'm trying to install it using the brand new disc that came with it. However my disc drive doesnt like the new disc.
First off I just popped the disc in and waited for it to auto install, nothing happened, so I went to my computer, clicked on my F drive and nothing happened. It wont even open the window where you can look at whatever files are on the disc. Well it tries but it just closes straight away.
I;ve tried other discs in the drive, some work some don't. Anything I burned myself works fine, stuff I burned on other computers works fine, all my backup discs work fine. DVD's and CD's are maybe maybe not, some work some dont, and anything at all that came with hardware doenst work at all!
I've tried rebooting, turning off my firewall and virus thingie, shouting.... nothing happens, I can hear the disc clunking and spinning but I can't access any of the info on it! *edit* I've also tried uninstalling the drive and rebooting, the drive re-installed automatically but I still cant get it to read the disc. I also ran a thing off the microsoft website to check for errors, it told me it detected some problems with my system but could not successfully apply all of the fixes, apparently the media in the CD/DVD drive is not readable, the drive is empty or the format is not supported.
Help Please!
I'm running Windows Vista Home Premium (sp1 32bit) on an Asus F5 entertainment system. I can't use SP 2 because it hates my internet dongle
Appologies if I'm in the wrong forum!

Hi fairy~nuff Welcome to D-A-L
Firstly you say you had this for your birthday. Which (from your stats) is May 5.
So a belated
If you don't already have it could you download the ASUS Live Update Utilityr for Vista
Found here: ASUSTeK Computer Inc.
Select your F5 model and click on the download option.
Now select OS.
Then click on the + beside utilities.
Locate the ASUS Live Update Utilityr for Vista and download the global version.
Once installed you can run the utility to ensure you have the latest drivers for Laptop.
Before you install any divers the utility recommends. Set a system restore point.
So should any update cause you problems you can restore your laptop to its privious state.
With the laptop latest drivers installed. Can you now use any DVD/CD on your optical drive>?.
Jim
Thanks Jim!
I'll go give that a try now and let you know how I got on!
um.
It would seem that I already have the ASUS live update thingie on my laptop but when i click it nothing comes up.
Also when I click that link I just get a blank page *facepalm*
*edit* Righto, I made a backup thingie, re-nstalled SP2 (just incase: it didn't fix anything) And now I've managed to find the live update on my computer, it's telling me it can't connect to the ASUS website. I'm currently downloading the latest version and *crosses fingers* it'll fix whatever's wrong with the updater.
*sigh* I need a live-in computer technology specialist :XD

ok, I updated the ASUS update thing. Rebooted, open the update thing and it told me I didn't need to update, I just tried again to check and it told me it can't connect to the website.
I've made sure that my firewall is supposed to allow it, I've tried turning the firewall off again and that doesnt help *scream*
And I still cant load my disc
Now what? *cries*
*latest news from Nuff*
So I had a browse round some of the similar threads here, decided to try deleting my Upperfilter and Lowerfilter Values (look at ME sounding like I know what I'm typing about!)
Followed all the destructions, rebooted, popped in my disc and holy COW it started to load! *bounces*
Then it crashed.
*facepalm*
Now it wont load again.
In order to delete upper and lower filters you need to edit the registry.
So the first question is. Did you do a back up of the registry before you deleted the filters?
When you say it crashed do you mean.
The PC stopped working with a Blue Screen error message (BSOD)?
If you are getting a BSOD could you give the exact details of the error message.
Or has the DVD stopped working?
Did you receive any error message when this happened?
Finally could you go to Start then Run in that window type devmgmt.msc.
This will open task manager.
Can you see any yellow exclamation marks in there?.
If so could you tell us what item the exclamation mark is beside.
Jim
I did, lol, I learned my lesson well the last time I screwed a computer up! And I made sure I had a System Restore Point all ready to go.
I mean it just all froze up, first off I got a little green load bar at the top of the window with my files in it, it was moving very slowly but I could hear the disc spinning, then the little bar stopped moving, I could still hear the disc, after about 5 minutes or so the window sort of greyed itself out and (not responding) appeared at the top. I tried to minimise it so I could look for some help and I got a little pop up telling me that the program was not responding and would I like to retry, I clicked yes and it started clunking the disc again.
After a minute or 2 I got another pop up telling me I needed to download Shockwave Player 11 (I think) so I clicked yes and a new tab opened in my browser, it barely started loading and everything froze up.
I can see everything on the screen, but I can't move the cursor, none of my keys work and I cant click anything. My laptop does that quite a lot when I'm online, apparently it's a "known issue" between my software for my intenet dongle and Vista SP2. All I can do when it does that is hold down my off button till it shuts off and then start up again.
Since then the disc just wont work. I tried a DVD again and that works fine.
No error messages and no BSOD, however, after it asked me if I wanted to retry it shut off all the icons on my desktop, all my open windows and my bar thingie at the bottom vanished for a bit. I could still see my screensaver.
I did the device manager thing, there's no ! next to the drive but there is one further down next to something called "Microsoft 6to4 adapter #10". If I double click that it says:
"This device is not working properly because Windows cannot load the drivers required for this device. (Code 31)
Click 'Check for solutions' to send data about this device to Microsoft and to see if there is a solution available."
If I click check for solutions nothing happens. I tried updating the drivers but it tells me they're up to date.
OK If you right click on My Computer and select manage
In that window click on the + beside Event Viewer.
Now select System and in the right hand pane are there any Red error messages.
Relating to your DVD/CD drive.
If so could you post the full message here.
For Microsoft 6to4 adapter #10 right click on it and select uninstall then reboot.
Windows should reinstall it OK.
Jim
Righto, I've no idea if I'm doing this right so I've screenied the window (there are a Shedload of these error messages, all the same just different times):
and 4 of these (I'm assuming its something in the disc I'm trying to install?):
And 6 of these:![]()
