my computer works on winXP prof sp2
my HD seems to work slowly and I would like to check its mechanical performance.
I do not find any errors on the HD and no need to defrag
How can I check if the HD works properly or perhaps it's time to replace it
please advise
thanks
How did you check? In Windows Explorer, you can run Error-checking. Check both options then allow the check to run upon next boot. Note for large drives, it can take many hours, even more than a day and may appear hung. Just let it run.I do not find any errors on the HD
Or, you can run the diagnostics for your drive. See Hard Drive Diagnostics - listed by maker.
Also, a drive running out of space can adversely affect performance. How much free space do you have? If running short, clean out the clutter with Disk Cleanup and consider uninstalling programs you don't need.
If space is fine and no errors are detected - start looking elsewhere. Have you scanned for malware?
My HD is WDC WD1600JS-00NCB1and fairly old one.
I scan my computer about once per week with both AD-Adware and Malwarebyte, and daily with Cclean. About 60% of the disk capacity is free.
Windows Data Lifeguard Diagnostics gave it a full “pass” after scanning.
However I still find the disk working slowly and would like to make a benchmark test and compare the results with the original Western Digital data.
Can it be done at all and if so what program can be perform such a test?
thanks
If the diagnostics passed, then it is not the disk that is slow.
Please tell us about your hardware.
Also, you should be at SP3. SP2 is much less secure, and there were some performance tweaks in SP3.
I attached here the Aida report for my hardware.
As to sp3 I tried already several times to download from MS, but they declained uploading to my computer.
