    Unhappy Ancient Amiga In Need

    Hi
I live in the UK and my old Amiga A4000 has a dead 060 on it's Cyberstorm board. I have managed to source a replacement chip, but does anyone know were I could send the CPU board to get the chip replaced? I am too afraid to try fixing it myself as if I damage it, I would struggle to find another Cyberstorm board. Any advice would be welcome! Edit: I should point out that the 060 is surface mounted onto the CPU board, so the old one would need to have the solder removed and the replacement one re-soldered

Any formally trained and properly equipped electronics technician can replace a surface mounted IC. You need to seek out a real electronics repair shop - one that repairs TVs and home theater equipment.

    A TV Repair Shop?
Didn't think of that, although they are a bit thin on the ground these days, could be worth a try. Thanks Digerati.

Yeah they are - that's because it is often cheaper to simply replace something than have it repaired - because troubleshooting and problem tracing/isolation can take considerable time, and that means high labor costs, just to find the failed component. Actually replacing the bad components takes only a couple minutes - once it is found. But yeah, I would recommend a TV repair shop before a shop that specializes in computers. Many computer shops have people that are very knowledgeable about assembling computers, or replacing major subassemblies (PSUs, graphics cards, or even the whole motherboard), but have no clue how to use a soldering iron.

Oh I wish I could just replace the Cyberstorm board, but new and unused hardware for Amigas is getting so difficult to find these days. I was lucky to find just the 060 chip. Mind you I am still waiting for Vesalia (the company I am buying it from) to get back to me. I want to be sure they are actually still there before sending any cash.

    Wise move.
