CPU Heat Issue?
So Ill admit I dont know much about computers but Im a do-it-yourselfer. So of course I tried doing stuff myself and ended up with a problem . I took my CPU cooler and CPU (2.4ghz duo core intel)
off my motherboard and cleaned it with some air cleaner because it had rather large dust bunnies growing inside of it. I put the processer + cooler back in and now when i boot my computer it randomly shuts down, usally (10-30) seconds after boot.
Im not sure yet but I think it might be a lack of contact between the CPU and its cooler, considering i didnt touch anything else. Also (not 100% sure) but it seems each time I start it, it runs for less time. Meaning the first boot will run for 30, then 25, 20, 15, etc. I have only tried a handful of times, for fear of damaging anything from overheating.
Recently (after the problem) I put in a new power supply, 750 from 400. I have the same problem, so i know its not power related.
Any input or ideas would be very very helpful
edit: Read some stuff on Thermal gel, which I had originally when the CPU was installed, of course when i went to clean it the gel was no longer gel but a burnt on lay of color. Sorry, seems like this is common issue people post about, but I wanna reassure myself before I go out and spend money on different stuff. And that wizard emoticon is awesome
haha another question, I have win7 on my system and I need to replace the motherboard due to compatiblity issues, does windows 7 stay with the harddrive or will i have to buy another copy. Mind you its OEM

Hi,
yes it is most likely a heat issue, you will need to (ideally) get some TIM clean, which will help you properly clean off the old stuff off the processor and heatsink. then you'll need some thermal interface to apply to the processor....
As for the motherboard question, Windows 7 will stay on the hard drive. It may be fine with the new motherboard as long as you install the drivers for the motherboard (chipset etc).
In the chance that it isnt happy and freezes etc, you'll need to clean install the operating system. Presuming you have the disc this won't be an issue. You might have to phone the automated phone system to active the copy however. You won't need to buy another though
And yes, the wizard emoticon is awesome
