    Memory Problem

I have a Micron Millennia Max computer (purchased August 2000) running an Intel Pentium III 800Mhxz processor. The motherboard has three 168-pin DIMM sockets. Each socket will support up to 256MB for a total of 768MB. I purchased the computer with 128MB of memory. I added two 256MB modules giving me a total of 640MB. I would like to replace the 128MB module with a 256MB module to give me the maximum of 768MB. When I remove the 128MB module and install a 256MB of memory identical to the two other modules the computer will not make it all the way through the boot up process. I can not find anything in the BIOS that needs to be changed .

Any help or suggestions will be appreciated.

    Thanks

On many older motherboards, you had to physically move jumpers on the motherboard to set up the RAM. Check your manual.

    Thanks for the quick response.

The manual states "There are no jumper setting changes required for the memory size or type, which is automatically detected by the system BIOS".

I will appreciate any other suggestions.

what is your operating system? Does the ram show up in BIOS? Have you tried a BIOS upgrade? With the new stick replaced with the old does it successfully boot up? Have you tried that new stick by itself? Have you tried a memory tester such as memtest86+? Whats the model number?

The operating system is Windows 98 SE.

The BIOS per the manual: "These fields show the total installed RAM and amounts allocated to Base Memory, Extended Memory, and other Memory. No options are available".
So to answer your question the memory shows up in the BIOS but you are not able to make changes. With the new memory installed , the computer does not make it all the way thru the boot up. With the new memory removed the computer boots up without any problem.Inasmuch as this is a old (August 2000) version, I was a little afraid of trying to update the BIOS. I am unable to try the memory test because the computer does not complete the start up process. I have not tried just the new stick. I will try and see what happens.

I believe there is some type of conflict between having 786MB of memory installed and Windows 98.

When I remove one of the old 256MB modules and install the new memory everything works fine.

When I remove the old 128MB module and replace it with a 256MB the 786,432K memory of memory shows up in setup but in the final stages of start up the computer goes into a reboot cycle.

Somehow the extended memory is causing the problem. The additional 128MB of memory is showing up in setup as extended memory but Windows 98 does not like it.

Errr, I should have asked for the OS version in my first post. There was a problem on some systems running with earlier versions Windows using, or trying to use, more than 512Mb of RAM. Have a look through this: Windows 95, 98 and Millenium Edition Support for Memory Configurations Greater than 512MB

The computer has been running for several years with 640MB of memory.
I have not received any of the error messages addressed in the article.

Then you might want to test the RAM.

MemTest is a tool supplied with
    Ultimate Boot CD - Overview
which is free to download and burn a bootable live cd. Image Burn is a free tool to make a bootable cd.

Not sure if memtest is included with Windows 98.
