Replaced Duron Cpu in Hp laptop wont boot

After being given an hp 5415n laptop with a Duron processor running at
    900 mhz. S L O W. I read where you could replace the 900mhz socket "a" duron with a socket "a" athlon. I got an athlon 2.4 with a 266fsb.
I was as careful with it as I could be in relation to damaging anything or static electricity. I used thermal grease. I was very careful with cables and screws.
The new cpu went in flat and I tightened the socket back up and the heatsink went back into place.
I took the Athlon back out and put the Duron in. Still wont post.
Worked fine prior to this, just ran slow.
Batt light on and power light comes on but it wont post.
Anybody got any ideas? I could use the help.
The blog I read said that the computer was still up and running years after him doing this. Plse hlp
    Windows XP HOME is installed.

Many computers require a BIOS upgrade to upgrade the CPU.

Yours has the latest at: ROMPaq Update for HP Notebook System BIOS 02-2005 GF.m1.12 A

Select software and drivers HP Pavilion n5415 Notebook PC - HP Customer Care (United States - English)

However if you cannot post you cannot upgrade the BIOS.

The next step I'd recommend is to clear your CMOS which is easy on a desktop but I am not sure about your laptop. Perhaps HP will have a clue:
