    Angry External Hard Drive Enclosure

My IO Magic external hard drive is malfunctioning after just a year and a half and warranty expired.

It works fine as far as power.

It is when it is hooked up to my computer it will not function properly.

I tried a different port on my computer, no help.

I tried a different USB connector, no help.

I remove the USB port connector from the unit, and it runs fine.

I insert the USB port connector in the unit, but not plugged into my computer, it works fine.

Then I plug it into my computer, and it has issues of running, and shutting off every couple of seconds.

So the issue seems to be that it malfunctions when it is connected to my computer.

I have another external connected, and it is working fine.

I have been using the unit in question up until yesterday, so I am sure the disk is fine as far as data stored is concerned.

My question is regarding a new enclosure.

Is it basically the same type of unit, but without a drive, and hopefully if I transfer the disc from my broken unit, it will work in the new enclosure ???

    Thank you for any help.

Just to verify: the power to the enclosure shuts down when connected to the computer?

Have you tried it on another computer?

As to a new enclosure if you match the existing model there should be no problem assuming the enclosure is the problem.

Also any enclosure should work as long as it matches the drive type IDE or SATA but a new IO enclosure might be best.

Does not seem to be a power issue, when I turn it on with no connection, it runs fine.

I have not tried it on another computer, but my other external is running well, so I doubt it is an issue.

It is only when it is connected it keeps turning on and off.

I will try IOMagic on line customer service tomorrow, they are only available M-F.

    Thanks for your help.

Tried it on another computer and same thing.

I would prefer not to buy another IOMagic enclosure.

I have read too many other complaints with just about the same problem as I am having with IOMagic, just about a year after purchase.

I am afraid even the enclosures may have issues after a year.

What is a good way to go about shopping for a new enclosure, and making sure it is compatible with my drive ?

Thank you again for any help and advice.

    Hi everybody.

My IOMagic 250 Gigabank external stopped functioning properly :smash: but I am quite sure the disk still has all my data.

Nothing life changing, but some photos, movies, and music I would like to keep.

Just looking for suggestions to purchase a decent, low cost enclosure.

I would prefer not to buy an IOMagic enclosure, I have seen too many similar complaints about IOMagic externals screwing up after about a year, and basically the same problem I am having with mine.

So, I would not trust nor want to purchase any more IOMagic products .

Thank you for any help, ideas, and suggestions.

I just checked it out now.

    Nice selection.

Is it relatively easy to remove from my IOMagic and install the disk into a new enclosure ???

Any links showing instructions to do this would be appreciated.

And thank you again for your help
