Hi. I have now tried 3 different webcams with integrated microphone on my desktop and in each case the microphone will not work! I am tearing my hair out!! Does anyone know why? I have done all the usual stuff - done the sound test - doesn't work. Not muted etc. Code 1 error message in Device Manager. I presume there must be a conflict somewhere but don't know where to start. Please help !!

Hi favorito and welcome.

Unfortunately, you told us nothing of the version of Windows, or the computer you are trying to fix - as this is surely a computer configuration, connection, or computer hardware issue - as it is not likely you got 3 bad cameras.

Typically, the Mic feature is part of the sound card feature-set. Also, for many sound solutions, the ports (jacks) play multiple roles, depending on what is plugged into it. So without knowing more, you need to make sure you are connected to the correct jack, the jack is enabled for Mic, and Mic gain (volume) is not muted or turned all the way down in Windows.

Hi Digerati, thanks for responding. I have Windows XP on a Dell computer. The webcam is plugged into a USB Port and I have tried different ports but its always the same. The sound card is Creative Soundblaster Live. Whichever webcam I use, I never get the webcam showing in the drop down selection box - only the Soundblaster.

I am afraid I am not following because I don't have this in front of me. You only see Soundblaster is what drop down box? What program are you looking at?

Does the Mic work with any other programs?

Each of the webcams has a settings option (sorry I don't know the technical names, I am a newbie!). When you select microphone there is a box where you can select the microphone you want to use. It should say the name of the webcam eg Logitech mic but the only option I have is Soundblaster - my sound card. It doesn't see the microphone because it isn't installed correctly.

Sorry forgot to add the microphone does not work at all in any program.

I found the answer on another website - its working now! For anyone else who has the same problem, you need to check if you have the following file in the Windows\Inf directory:

wdma_usb.inf

The file is on the Windows installation CD. I copied mine from my laptop.
