Laptop to Desk top hard drive

I had the battery fail on my laptop and am unable to get the copmuter to turn on. I really need to get the data off my Laptop computer. I bought the power adaptor to plug the hard drive into the desktop, but it doens't work. I tried it both alone and plugged in with the desk top hard drive. What am I doing wrong or is there any place that might have a tutorial on how to set it up.
    Thanks in advance

Make sure your regular hard drive is set to master with the jumpers (not CS), and placed on the end of the ribbon cable. Then, set the jumpers on this drive to be a slave (not CS) and put it on the middle of the ribbon cable. See if that gets you up and running.

That didn't work, every time I start the computer with the laptop hard drive in it says "boot fail, insert disc". Don't know if that helps. Also on the laptop hard drive there is no instructions on where to place pins to make it a slave. I only have device 0, device 1, or cable select. And on the desk top should I use "master or single HD", or master with non-ATA compatible drive.

    Thanks again

Device/Cable position ONLY applies when using the CS jumper position. (As well, the data cable must be an 80 conductor/40 pin cable, not a 40 conductor/40 pin cable, or else the CS positions won't work.)

If you are using MASTER or SLAVE jumper settings, the device can be attached anywhere on the data cable.

Ensure that your desktop disk is set to MASTER. Set the laptop jumper to Device 1.

Still didn't work. Is there any settings that I need to change or hard ware to detect.
The other issue is if I plug the HD in one way I get the error msg, If I turn it around I can start windows normally. there doenst seem to be any defining way of how to put it in.

Did some more looking around, am I better off using a Hard drive enclosure with USB cable, something like this.

Can you attach the laptop disk as the SLAVE on the Secondary IDE Channel? Being on the Primary Channel, the system is probably "seeing" the second O/S (Operating System) and getting "confused".

I simply do not agree at all with the statement about the device Master/Slave being attached anywhere on the ribbon cable.

Just wanted to point that out so it would not appear that by not replying it would seem I agree with that statement.

I do agree about the need for an 80 connector cable though.

Have a wonderful day and I hope you get your problem solved.

    Here is one source which outlines this;

    http://www.easeus.com/disk-copy/Sing...-Jumpering.htm

    From the above link:
"If you are using two drives on a channel, it is important to ensure that they are jumpered correctly. Making both drives the master, or both the slave, will likely result in a very confused system. Note that in terms of configuration, it makes no difference which connector on the standard IDE cable is used in a standard IDE setup, because it is the jumpers that control master and slave, not the cable. This does not apply when cable select is being used, however."

    Back to the issue.....

You possibly/probably have a CDROM drive on your Secondary IDE Channel.

If so, and there is not another device attached to the Secondary IDE Channel data cable (ie; a 40 pin connector is free), ensure the CDROM jumper is set to MASTER and not CS. Set the laptop disk jumper to Device 1. Then attach your laptop disk to the free connector on that Secondary IDE Channel data cable.

When you boot, watch to make sure the laptop disk is identified during the POST (Power On Self Test).
