    Connecting Monitors

Can one connect more than 3 or 4 monitors to a Macbook Pro, with each monitor running a different video?

I am working on an art project, and would like to have 12 different video’s running on 12 different monitors. Any idea’s of how to accomplish this is great.
p.s. I also have a pc, if that helps with software issues.

    Thanks!

    Hi Sweetupndown and welcome.

So are we talking two different projects? 3 or 4 monitors to a Mac for one project and 12 monitors to another computer for the second project?

To use 3 or 4 monitors, I don't know about the Mac, but you can certainly do that with a PC - but it would not be easy. Getting 4 monitors running would be easy, it would require 2 video cards, both with two video out connections - and setting that up with XP (or Vista) is easy. And getting the same video on all 4 monitors is easy, and so is getting the one video spread across all 4 monitors (to make one big display) is easy. HOWEVER, getting each monitor to display a different video would not be so easy. It would require huge amounts of horsepower - both in terms of graphics processor and graphics memory, but also CPU power. And I am not aware of a media program that would run in multiple sessions. For example, you can open several Internet Explorer sessions (windows) or Word documents and do different things in each one. But try to open a second session of Windows Media Player, for example and either nothing will happen, or you will get an already running error.

And to do the same thing with 12 different videos would be even more difficult. You can add more video cards but then you quickly have power supply issues. And Windows has a 10 monitor limit so that would be a problem.

Your best bet, IMO, is to get 12 computers with 12 monitors and network them. Still not easy, but doable.

Now there is professional equipment that will do what you want - but we talking 100s of 1000s of dollars now.

Note that some Macs have a similar capability called Screen Spanning but again, the idea is to extend your desktop so you have more work space, not so you have multiple discreet workspaces.
