    Question Hard Drive Replacement Questions

    Hello all,

I currently have a 40 GB hard drive in my older HP a705w desktop that runs at 5400 rpms and attaches with an IDE cable. I want to upgrade to a bigger hard drive, but I'm not sure if I can get a bigger hard drive at the 5400 rpm speed. My question is can I get a hard drive at a higher speed (such as the now standard 7200 ones) and install it without any issues, and what would be the max amount of hard drive space allotted for my computer (if any)? Also would I need to upgrade my power supply for this to work? If not, what would you ever need a new power supply for?

    Thanks,
    -quagmier

RPM's are not an issue. The ATA rating is. Yours is ATA 100 whereas most new drives are ATA 133.

Size should not be an issue assuming XP SP2 is installed.

Power is not an issue unless you are adding several new drives.

Power supplies sometimes fail is one reason you might need a new one. Also new graphics cards take a lot more power than old ones plus new processors as well. The new SLI interface requires more power as well.
