    Will my HD work with this cable?

    Hello,

    I have a SEAGATE BARRACUDA 7200.10, 250GB, ULTRA ATA/100 (ST3250620A) desktop hard drive. The manual says that an 80 conductor ULTRA ATA cable should be used with it.

    I do not know too much about computers and I have not read the manual until 5 minutes ago. I just bought a cable at best buy this afternoon. I had no idea that there are different kind of cables for different hard drive types. The cable I bought is an ULTRA ATA 100 ROUND CABLE (DX-C101861)

    Would my hard drive work with this cable? If yes, what are the disadvantages using this cable rather than the 80 conductor ULTRA ATA cable.

    Thanks,

    Herringtrader

    Will it work? Yes.

    80 wire is a later version of the old 40 wire

    Even Dynex does not specify this product:

    http://www.dynexproducts.com/pc-157-...und-cable.aspx

    If you want you can probably see the end by the connectors and count the wires. There will be either 40 or 80. If 80 they will also be thinner.

    Although 80 are preferable 40 would still work. Most hardware is "backwards compatible".

    See this: http://www.pcguide.com/ref/hdd/if/id...Cable80-c.html

    As this is a relatively new "round" cable I would guess that it is 80 wire.

    Just a note;

    As jephree stated 40 conductor will work. You just need an 80 to realize the full speed capabilities of the drive.

    Yes, it works - maybe the BIOS will send a message that there is a wrong cable, but i works! The connectors from 40pin an 80pin is the same only a different cable.
