PC suddenly died, won't start again?

First post, so hi to all.

I was playing a game the other night and in the middle of it the computer suddenly died, as though someone had switched the power off.

And that was it, it won't start or do anything......completely dead.

I've had the side of the case off and checked all the cables and connections and can't see anything that looks like it's out of place, wiggled all connections to make sure they're seated OK.

I have the green power light on the M/B but that's it.

No idea why it should suddenly stop dead when it's been working really well up 'till now.

If anyone can offer me any advice as to where to start in the process of finding out exactly how to remedy this, and find the culprit that caused the problem, I'd really appreciate it.

    Cheers for now.

    Ps I have;

    AMD64 4000+
    ASUS A8N-E
    2Gig 3200
    nVidia 7800 GTX
    2x160Gig Raid 0 SATA2
    Audigy 2ZS
    EZCool 550W PSU

Nothing fiddled with, installed or touched in any way. Side of case hasn't come off in months (it needed a clean but nothing that would cause overheating).

Do the fans run? Any LED's on the DVD/CD or Floppy drive? Any front case LED's?

First off remove the RAM and try to boot.

Do you hear BEEP BEEP BEEPS ... ???

Hopefully you do. If so try one stick of RAM only. If the problem persists try different sticks and different slots.

    Thanks for the reply Jephree.

I took out RAM but no change, the PC is completely lifeless.

The only thing that happens when I switch on the power at the back of the case is that the LED's on my keyboard briefly flash on for a half second and the power light at the bottom of the M/B glows green. The normal on/off switch at the front of the case doesn't have any effect.

No fans come on, no case LED's come on, nothing at all.

When it stopped, I was in the middle of a game of Red Alert 2, which isn't really going to worry a pc with an AMD64 4000+, a 7800GTX and 2 Gig of RAM, so I doubt that has any bearing on why it stopped so suddenly.

It was as though someone switched off the power; a click and whoosh, blank screen and deadness!

Could it be the PSU? Why do I still have power to the M/B if it is?

I have a volt meter somewhere, can I check any cables to see if I'm getting any volts and what they are? What cables should I check?

    Thanks for any continued help.

You can buy an inexpensive PSU tester at almost any electronics store.

    http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q...=Google+Search

I would suspect that that is the problem.

That little LED on the motherboard requires so little power that a 99% burned out PSU would light it.

Also the motherboard battery might even be strong enough.

Thanks for your help again, I guess a new PSU seems to be the way to go.

I'll get a decent one this time.

    Cheers.

    Hi guys.

Thanks for all your help. Just to bring this thread to a happy close, I bought a 600w Jeantec PSU which I've just finished fitting and am typing this from my formerly dead pc.

Works a treat and so much tidier now.

    Cheers all.

    Rykers.
