Monitor Shuts Off, Startes Out Slowly And Then Graduated To Not Working. Just Keeps Turning Off. I Have A Gateway 9310x. Originally The Problem Started On My 19" Acer Lcd Monitor So I Sent It To Texas For Repair, Borowed Back My Old 17" Crt Monitor And Installed It,worked Fine For 2 Days Then The Same Problem. I Removed The Video Card Nvidia Ge Force 6600g, Thought That Might Fix It. No Luck I Am Running On The Motherboard Now And Am Still Experencing The Same Problem. I Have A Toothpick In The On /off Switch To Keep The Monitor On, Is This A Virus Or What?

This forum seems pretty dead. I've gotten no response to my post either. Well...I'm no expert on this and I don't see anything on the VGA spec (eg, http://pinouts.ru/data/VGA15_pinout.shtml) that would enable the computer to turn off the monitor, nor have I ever seen a monitor where the on/off wasn't push-and-hold...

Umm... I take it back. Seems there's a spec called VESA DPMS (see http://www.epanorama.net/documents/pc/vga_bd15.html) for using the sync signals to turn off the monitor. Learn something new every day.

Anyway, since switching to the onboard VGA didn't fix it, look at the software. Not likely to be a virus. But... on the XP machine I'm on now (usually I use and am more familiar with Win 98 ) I find that there's a Power Options interface on the Control Panel that allows you to set the monitor to turn off in as litte as 1 minute of inactivity. So, check your power management settings.

    Hiya Butch

This is a new one on me to be honest. You have probably ruled out sleep and hibernation settings by now?
If i had to guess, i would say there is a problem with the PSU or even the Processor that is causing a conflict.
Have you tried the monitor on a different PC to rule out any problems with it?

Hopefully someone with more experience with hardware will have a better idea

Please bare in mind that this forum is run by people who have jobs and families and who contribute in their own free time andyvphil. You mentioned in your thread that your problem had righted itself so there is/was no real need to reply

Just ran across your reply in a self-search. Yeah, we all got jobs but I didn't even seem to get any views. Anyway, ..."I'm still curious: Is there a time delay in place of a fuse? Is there a capacitor I could have discharged to shorten the wait?" All these months later I'm still curious if there is a change in computer design I'll want to know about next time. And if you know the answer and had time to NOT answer me...
