    Hard Drives not detecting

Hola folks, I once again have a computer issue

Old computer running Windows 2000. but not detecting my secondary master HD (WD 120GB) and my external hd (40gb)

    bios detects both
    device manager detects both
but they dont show up when i open up the My Computer Icon.

    any help would be great

Are they formatted properly? You may have to format them before Windows can detect them as actual drives in My Computer. Remember, reformatting will erase *ALL* your data on those drives.

Hi Pokeh, some externals have drivers of their own. Have you installed any of your externals own drivers; presuming it has any? If not, remove it. Start, plug in the external; wait for the wizard to find the external and just let Win2000 do the job.......you can also do the "find new hardware" etc.......but I am still wondering if you need different drivers than the ones windows has. You could go to the manufacturers site and look if their are specific drivers for your paricular model.

I have a Nexstar, or something like that, and it comes with drivers, but WinXP ones do the job well on their own..........an external I had before this one needed seperate drivers.

Please let us know how you go

I went thru the cd it gave me and it said if im using windows 2000/xp i dont not need any other drivers, but they do provide drivers for windows 98 (which i am not using)

with that being said this is what I did. I removed (uninstalled my ext hd through the add/remove hardware in control panel)
I rebooted my machine and it re detected my external hd and it shows up in the *My Computer* Folder. (so at least Im getting somewhere)

The only downfall is that it says that there is an i/o device error which Im unsure of how to resolve at the moment

Pokeh, have you got it plugged into the MB direct, or just a usb hub? It needs power direct from the MB [in most cases].

Also, have you assigned it a drive letter?

    Is it formatted?

its plugged into the mb from the back directly

it was working before, but now its not, I have some files on it

when it (was) working it would automatically assign itself a drive letter f:
c,d,e are used by my optical drive and 2 hds

Pokeh, can you plug it into another PC to get the data off, then replug it into the current PC, reformat to the files system you are using, and I presume that is NTFS, and assign it a drive letter of your own.
