Computer Wont Start
Hi, i am trying to fix a problem on my girlfriends computer and just want to make sure i am headed in the right direction.
First off it is an eMachines and it is like a 1.4 - 1.7 Ghz processor i dont know all the specs as it is not my comp.
Well coming back from Xmas break to her dorm room we realized her computer just wont turn on, all was fine when she left for break. I then noticed her computer was still plugged in (everything is supposed to be unplugged when you leave)
So my guess was that her power source got blown out by a burst of power or something to that nature. The old power source did nothing. First i tried an old working power source i had laying around my house. It made the power light on the front just keep blinking and making a clicking noise, but would not turn on. I realized that power supply lacked the extra 4 pin MB connector.
So i purchased a Diablo 250 watt power supply (same wattage as her original) This new PS also had the 4 pin connector. So this time after everything was hooked up and i switched the PS on. The light on the front of the PC lit up and stayed lit, but the computer still will not even attemt to turn on, and i can not hear any fan movement in the PS.
My only guess from here is that it was a power surge that knocked out her comp, and it actually fried her processor too. Hopefully i am way off, does anyone have any ideas?????

Hi,
What I would do first is to clear the CMOS and see if that helps in case it was a power surge. You can do that by moving that jumper on the board from Pins 1 and 2 to pins 2 and 3 for about ten minutes. Then, it needs to be moved back before you turn the computer back on. Or, you can just remove the battery and replace it after about ten minutes. Then give it a try and report back.

It could also be a friend PCI card. Does she have a modem or ethernet card plugged in? We had a phone line surge awhile back that fried the phone line PCI card.

I couldnt figure out where the CMOS jumpers are. However i did remove the battery to the motherboard and tried that. Nothing changed, so i actually just went and bought another battery thinking that one may be dead, that also didnt help at all. Her computer is only hooked up to a LAN line and it is built into the motherboard, no PCI modem was in use.
ANY OTHER IDEAS????
Could it be that the processor got fried from a power surge???

Hi,
If you have two sticks of memory, then take one out and try only one. Check your motherboard manual to see which slot to use for one stick only. If that does not work, then try the other stick in that slot.
If that does not work, take out all memory and see if it starts squalking when (Beeping a code) you try to run it without memory.
Post back.

Didn't get to try yet. i will post back ASAP. What does it mean if it is doing the squaking??
-
It means that it has no memory available to boot up, but it is trying to read the memory slots. I believe th squaking is a good sign.. Mine did it too when I didn't set my RAM in far enough.. Took me awhile to figure out what it was.

First thing first, i tried taking all the memory out and the computer did not do any squawking, what does this mean???
Ok, i dont think that would be the problem, since the memory was never touched prior to the computer just stopping to turn on. But i will try reputting in just one stick since i may have messed with it before changing the power supply.
Can someone please tell me whether or not the syptoms i listed could mean that the processor is fried?
