No audio on my laptop
I have a Gateway 400vtx laptop with Windows XP and my sound is no longer working. I have tried system restore, checked the volume, tried speakers and headphones, uninstalled and reinstalled my sound card (Sigma Tel-C Audio), tried updating the sound driver (there was no more recent driver) and gone entirely through both the Windows and Gateway sound troubleshooters. Nothing has helped and my computer shows all sound hardware and software as being functional. Please help! How can I fix this?

Have you tried to do a driver rollback in the Device Manager?

Thanks for the welcome, and yep, I tried a driver rollback and it said "No driver files have been backed up for this device" and sent me to the sound troubleshooter (which didn't help) I also tried updating the driver and I don't recall the exact message but it basically told me I have the latest driver.

Honestly it sounds like the sound card went bad to me. I know one user in particular can help you a bit more then I. But it may be time to buy a new one. I hope you get it straightened out without buying a new one

Thanks. If have a chance to contact the user who knows about sound cards would you please ask them to contact me? Or could you possibly just give me their username so I could maybe send them a message or something? When I look at my sound card under "Sounds and Audio Devices Properties" it says that "This device is working properly" but I guess there could still be something wrong with it physically...

Hi Jerrica, couple questions:
1. what precipitated this problem? Install new software, etc?

If you have followed the troubleshooting tips in the downloadable pdf, and nothing in particular preceeded the problem(virus, malware, new software, etc)
then it is likely the sound card may be bad. I will be in class the rest of the evening but post a reply anyway and I will look at it when I can, thanks!

The sound has always worked until today. Just Saturday I was playing a CD and everything was fine but suddenly today there was no audio. No error message, no nothing, just no audio. I added some new software about a week ago but it didn't affect the sound as far as I know of because it worked since then. I have Windows XP Home Edition Version 2002 with Service Pack 1 (I installed Service Pack 2 about 3 weeks ago but it really slowed my computer down so I took it off. Don't think that affected the sound). I also have a Mobile Intel(R) Celeron(R) CPU 2.20 GHZ, 2.19 GHz, and 248 MB of Ram.
I tried everything in the downloadable pdf, but nothing there worked.
Is there any way to tell if the sound card is bad besided actually looking at it? If that is the case, I'll probably just have to take it into a shop because I know nothing about what's going on inside my laptop.

Question: No sound from cd player, or no saound at all: ie do you hear the windows logon/off .wav file when you log on/off?

Installation for Windows XP
1. From the Start menu, click Control Panel.
2. In Control Panel, click Performance and Maintenance.
3. In Performance and Maintenance, click the System icon.
4. In the System Properties dialog box, click the Hardware tab, and then click Device Manager.
5. In Device Manager, click the plus sign (+) next to Other Devices, and then double-click Multimedia Audio Controller.
6. In the Multimedia Audio Controller Properties dialog box, click the Driver tab, and then click Update Driver.
7. In the Hardware Update Wizard dialog box, click Install from a list or specific location (Advanced), and then click Next.
8. In the next dialog box, click Search for the best driver in these locations, and then click Include this location in the search.
9. In the text box, type: C:\CABS\9520360. Click Next.
10. Click Finish.
11. In the Sigmatel Audio dialog box, click Close.
12. Close Device Manager and restart the computer.
Removal
Windows XP

5. In the SigmaTel C-Major Audio Properties dialog box, click the Driver tab, and then click Roll Back Driver.
6. In the SigmaTel C-Major Audio dialog box, click Yes.
7. In the SigmaTel C-Major Audio Properties dialog box, click Close.
8. Close Device Manager.
