I changed the modem on my machine a while back. Recently, I ran the Recovery Disk to reinstall Windows. (WordPad was missing).
I realize that the OEM disk is married to some of the hardware...Particularly the Motherboard. However, it would not let me get through the set up of Windows! The window would freeze and would not go on to the next step where it asks you how the computer will connect to the Internet.
I ran the disk 5 times, called some tech help and they said that they had never heard of that freezing and that changing the modem should not affect installation of Windows.
Finally, I did pop in the old burned out (original) modem and it flew right through the set up.I am really glad that I still had the part...Otherwise I would still be scratching my (A) head right now.
All I can figure is that when they manufactured this machine...they went a bit too far with integrating the disk with the hardware.
Is there any setting I can change? Or should I just hang on to the modem?
Computer is: emachine T2858
next time ( hope there is no need) try uninstalling the device from device manager and leaving it disconnected from the board before running the recovery cd, it should then install fine, then you can install the new modem after recovery...it is a hal.dll uissue...Originally Posted by Blizey
 There will always be a need. I always feel better after I reinstall. Kind of like cleaning house.Originally Posted by jazzman
OK, I'll try what you recommended as far as the modem is concerned.
Thanks
It must be a full moon. I'm having the same problem with my T2858. I haven't used dialup for years, so I just left the modem out when I wanted to use the same slot for a video capture card. It hangs up at "next" on "enter computer name". Well, now the system recovery works with the modem back in. Crazy! You should disable drivers when you pull out a board, sure, but with a system crash, thats nearly impossible. Anyway, thanks for saving an old man the pain of a complete re-install.Originally Posted by Blizey

I'm glad it helped out, Glenn and saved you some time. :-) That is exactly where the setup would hang and could not continue to the next step. It seemed odd that the store where I purchased this machine was not familiar with this issue, so I figured I would put it out there in case anyone else was having the same problem.
Jazzman...Another question!
The old modem is not present in device manager. It is still in Add/Remove Programs though and it will not go away when I hit add/remove. Could that become an issue next time we reinstall?
