    Arrow Floppy Drive Problem

Hi all, I'm having a strange problem. Mabe someone would like to take a shot at it. I built a new computer for my son in May. He is currently working on a book report over the summer and was saving each chapter to a floppy. All of a sudden after saving 12 chapters, the floppy became unreadable. Kept getting message, " floppy unformatted, do you want to format?" I tried reading on another computer and got 2 chapters showing out of the 12 that was saved. The floppy drive works with a different floppy, but not the one with the saved data. Any ideas?? I'm considering getting a USB floppy drive if this will help.
Computer is: AMD Athlon AMD64 3000+
ASUS A8V Deluxe Rev 2 Mobo 1011 bios
    1Gig Corsair dual channel memory
Western Digital 80 Gig PATA HD
    ASUS CD-Rom Drive
    ASUS DVD-ROM Drive
S.B. Audigy 2 Zs sound card
    ALPS 1.44M Floppy Drive
    Puma II P.S. 28A on 12v rail
    Windows XP Home w/SP2

Unfortunately, saving data on a floppy is often unreliable, especially with Windows XP. Sometimes XP will read it, sometimes it won't. Some things I've tried in the past that have worked is to:

    1. Carefully tap the side edge of the floppy against the desk for a couple of light taps, then reinsert the floppy in the drive and see if it will read it.

    2. Gently slide the metel tab back and forth a couple of times, then reinsert and see if it will read it.

    3. Pop the floppy in the freezer for 3 minutes, then reinsert and see if it reads.

    4. Reboot the machine, then see if it reads....
