Here is good one to solve

    Hi All.

I don't usually post question like this, in fact I have never done it.

A friend of mind got a job in California and as he was leaving, left me his computer.....I don't know why he did he have a smirk in his face when he gave me the computer (wait till you here this)

It a AMD 1800+ / 384 Meg Ram (133Mhz) /40 Gig drive / Asus A7V133 (VIA chip set) and 128 Meg ATI video card.

There is no operating system on this computer and I'm, trying to put one on. Here is my delima. AMD 1800+ should run at 1529 MHz right ? so I set the BIOS to 11.5 X 133 (Clock speed), and it starts to install, as soon as it get past the point where is say "Setting up Windows" I get BSOD :bawling: ... and I have tried many time with different installation CD, Different RAM, different HD, different Video card...I have even changed the power supply...(BIOS is up-to-date too).... I couldn't believe this:angry:

Furthermore, I went to BIOS, and change the CPU to 1150 MHz (next Auto Setting, underutilize the CPU), any way, this time I get further with the install BUT it somewhere along the line it can't read the CD and starts popping up error (skip or retry)....of course I went through hardware changes with this setting too......

Scenario#3, I change the CPU speed to manual 10 X 133 (1330Mhz) Guess what, the stupid thing does not even go to POST.. NADA (Black screen)....... I have been pulling my hair here looking for ideas.................(oh, now I know why he had smirk on his face)

I have told him computer is working fine since he has been asking about it..... I need some new idea (short or changing MOBO and CPU)

    Cheers

Which core does that 1800+ have? They do have different speeds.

    e.g. AMD 2600+ w/ a TB core clocks at 2085hz, while a 2600+ w/ a Barton core clocks at 1990hz (or close to it, I believe).

Also, try replacing known good with known bad You may find the problem somewhere else.

    did you check this:
For a Jumperfree configuration, JEN must be set to 2-3, VID1 through VID4 should be on 3-4, and the DSW interrupts should be turned Off.

    Thanks for the reply guys

Cameron, CPU is AMD Athlon 1800+ or they call it AX1800DMT3C socket A ...so I'm kinda positive that I got the frequency correct.

If you could elaborate more on this comment "Also, try replacing known good with known bad You may find the problem somewhere else" I don't understand what you are saying. Thanks

jazzman, 10-4 to all the suggestions....everything is in order but no joy yet

Vidster, I really want to see you with your coat ON

    Cheers

Thius sounds like a device driver issue to me, you could try slipstreaming the asus drivers into the install cd...make sure to check cpu temp too...

just a thought, after the failed attempts...did you happen to try to dump the cmos manually? otherwise..I have to admit that either i am stumped, or you just got a weird board! lol
